What stunned Pep Guardiola told Txiki Begiristain when Erling Haaland Man City mega deal was brokered
Pep Guardiola admitted he was taken by surprise when told the news of Erling Haaland's incredible contract extension.
The City striker agreed a new nine and a half year deal on Friday, keeping him at the Etihad until 2034. It's an incredible statement from both player and club as City seek to reframe their squad for the years ahead.
Guardiola was naturally thrilled that his star striker had put pen to paper on fresh terms with reports linking the 24-year-old with a move to Real Madrid having been consistent over the past few months and years. But the City chief, who agreed his own new contract earlier this season, was taken aback when Etihad director of football Txiki Begiristain broke the news to him.

"I said can you repeat?" said Guardiola. "He said to me [again], I said sure! It's good news, that means a lot.
"[The board] have shown the trust. It's the club who brings the players here. To be with his mates or this manager or other ones. It's the process for the club, they have to decide if we have to change some players or a manager. That's why they decide.
"The trust has always has been there, the last month and a half in another environment I wouldn't be here. That's for sure. Always has been there."
It has been suggested Haaland has seen his previous wage of £375,000 per week upped to £500,000 per week, meaning his deal would be worth a whopping £26million per year.
“I am really happy to have signed my new contract and to be able to look forward to spending even more time at this great club," Haaland said after penning his new deal. “Manchester City is a special club, full of fantastic people with amazing supporters and it’s the type of environment that helps bring the best out of everybody.
“I also want to thank Pep, his coaching staff, my teammates and everyone at the club as they have all helped me so much in the past couple of years. They have made this such a special place to be and now I am City no matter what. I want to keep developing, keep working to get better and look to do my best to try and help us achieve more success going forward.”
