Stunning 'headed' try by Welsh rugby player leaves fans blown away

While rare, length-of-field scores and mind-boggling team moves are some of the finest tries you can see, but sometimes, there comes an absolute anomaly.

Three years ago, Bridgend Ravens full-back Edd Howley provided that instance. Swansea had clipped a grubber in behind and Howley met the bouncing ball by kicking it straight off the deck.

With the ball staying in-field, Howley made the chase down the left touchline to retrieve his punt. The ball bounced kindly back towards him, but it was a tad too high to catch at pace. Instead, the speedster decided to head the ball forward (yes, you are allowed to do this, despite what many people think).

The final Swansea man in the backfield was left shocked as Howley burnt past him, before jogging in to dot down. You can check out the clip below.

"I didn't have a choice I don't think!" answered Howley when asked about what was going through his mind. "I didn't have time to catch it, so I stuck my head on it. I played football when I was a kid, so that helped probably!"

Posting on his Instagram at the time, Howley included the footage of the try with the caption: "Hell of a shift to get the win Bridgend Ravens. Swipe for a surprise!" Even Wales fly-half Callum Sheedy commented, saying "Mental try mate".

Howley signed for Ravens from Cardiff RFC in 2021, and still plays for the Bridgend club to this day. He started at full-back against RGC at the weekend, and helped his team to victory in a 38-19 win in Colwyn Bay.
