Sunderland have taken up the option in Wilson Isidor's loan deal, making his stay at the Stadium of Light a permanent one.

The French forward has signed a deal until the summer of 2028, after joining the Black Cats on loan from FC Zenit St. Peterburg in the summer. The 24-year-old has impressed during his first few months on Wearside, with nine goals in 26 Championship appearances after joining the club in the summer on loan until the end of the season.

There had been transfer speculation regarding his future at the club, with a number of sides across Europe said to be keen on his services, but Sunderland were always in the driving seat.

Speaking to SAFC after making the move a permanent one, Isidor said: “I’ve been waiting for this moment since my first steps at the Club, so I’m very happy. Right from the start, many moments made me believe that Sunderland is home for me and my family.

"On the plane from Zenit, I received so many messages from the fans, and then I saw the stadium and met the people for the first time. At my presentation against Burnley, I knew the fans would always support me and this has been true in my best moments and the toughest. I love playing for Sunderland, and this is just the start.”

Black Cats sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman added: “Wilson’s made a really positive start to his time at Sunderland and we are delighted that he will remain with us permanently. Everyone can see that he thoroughly enjoys being part of our Club and he has performed at a very high standard.

"In finalising this transfer, it’s also pleasing to note how motivated Wilson was to commit his future to Sunderland. This process has no doubt been supported by the warm reception he’s received from our fan base, who I’m sure will be delighted that he is now officially red and white.”

Sunderland remain hopeful of bolstering their ranks before the transfer window closes, with Regis Le Bris confident heading into deadline day. The Black Cats hold an interest in Sporting winger Marcus Edwards, though Burnley are also interested in the England youth international.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday, the Wearsiders boss said: "“We need good quality. That is very important, but it is very clear that, today and for a long period before, the forward positions are our weakest positions.

"“It is just a question of numbers there. If we don’t recruit a player in these positions, then we will be on the edge because every time we got an injury, we wouldn’t have players at the same level on the bench who could come in."

The decision to make the deal a permanent one also frees up a loan spot should Sunderland look to bring in a loan signing before deadline day.
