Wilson Isidor’s persistence was finally rewarded with a goal as he ended his recent famine for Sunderland against Blackburn Rovers insisting: “I was waiting for that moment.”

The Zenit St Petersburg loanee has missed some big chances in the last few games but was on the scoresheet at Ewood Park in the 2-2 draw. The striker’s tireless performances over recent weeks were rewarded as he returned to the scoresheet alongside Chris Rigg, as the Lads claimed a point on Boxing Day. It could have been three had Eliezer Mayenda not fluffed his lines at the death when clean through, only to be denied by keeper Aynsley Pears.

Speaking to safc.com, Isidor reflected on his goal and praised the travelling red and white army ahead of another trip, this time to Stoke City on Sunday.

“It was difficult to be happy because we started poorly and we took a goal and then we took a goal again in the last 10 minutes so it’s a contrasting result,” he explained. “We are happy to stay unbeaten but the most important thing is the win. We know where we want to go and where we want to finish so we cannot be satisfied with one point. We are Sunderland and we want to win every game. A point is good but we want more.”

On his goal he added: “I was waiting for that moment – it’s been a long period without a goal, but I’m happy to be back on the scoresheet. The gaffer and my team-mates have given me a lot of confidence, and make sure I don’t drop my head. I would have loved the goal to be the winner, but I’m still happy to help the team.”

He loved his first experience of a Boxing Day game and continued: “It was amazing when I first walked on the pitch. I have never seen so many supporters for an away game – I want to thank them for coming to the game, but unfortunately we couldn’t give them the win for Christmas. We have the best support in England, I don’t know whether I can say that, well, best in the North East for sure.

“Now we go to Stoke City and it will be a tough game. It will be difficult, and the objective is the same, to come home with three points.”
