Sunderland loan watch as Matete makes impact and keeper ready for Man City FA Cup test
Sunderland's loan players produced another stellar weekend of results with late comebacks and clean sheets the story of the last few days.
At Bolton Wanderers, midfielder Jay Matete was an 86th-minute substitute in the 2-1 win at Exeter City In League One, but came on to make the difference in a dramatic win for the Trotters. Two minutes after Matete’s introduction, Aaron Collins scored a late equaliser before Aaron Morley netted a stoppage-time winner. That game was Matete’s 30th appearance of the season in all competitions.
Matty Young has been starring in goal for Salford City, who beat MK Dons away 1-0. The 18-year-old goalkeeper continued his incredible run of form for the Ammies with another victory.

Young kept his sixth clean sheet in a row in League Two as Hakeeb Adelukan’s goal was the difference between the two sides. He also earned himself the Man of the Match award for his performance in between the sticks. It’s also Salford’s sixth consecutive victory while Young kept a seventh clean sheet from eight. Next up for the goalkeeper is a huge FA Cup derby game against current Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
Meanwhile, in France, Pierre Ekwah helped St Etienne to a 3-1 win against Reims as his club ended a run of four straight defeats in Ligue 1 with an important victory at Geoffroy-Guichard. Ekwah played the full 90 minutes as St Etienne came from a goal down to win the game thanks to a brace from Augustine Boakye and one from Lucas Stassin.
The midfielder made his 15th appearance of the season in the process. They head to the Parc des Princes next to face current league leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
Timothee Pembele had a day to forget as he was in the Le Havre side that lost 5-1 to Marselle. However, Pembele made his eighth appearance for the club as he continues to add valuable gametime in the French top tier. Le Havre host Lens next Sunday.
Nectarios Triantis helped Hibs to a 3-3 draw with Rangers in Scotland, as the hosts came back from two goals down. Triantis played the full 90 minutes as Hibs extended their unbeaten run in the Scottish Premiership to six games. Next up for them is another home tie against Motherwell.
Elsewhere, Caden Kelly has completed his loan spell at National League North side Darlington. The midfielder made 12 appearances for the Quakers and scored three goals, including a brace against Scarborough Athletic on Boxing Day. Ben Crompton missed out on FA Trophy action with Tamworth after the postponement of their fourth round tie against Sutton United. The defender will be looking forward to an FA Cup tie against Premier League Tottenham Hotspur when they visit the Lamb Ground on Sunday.
