Sunderland player who 'made the difference' - and one who 'regressed in second half'
How did the players fare in Sunderland's 1-0 win over Portsmouth?
SUNDERLAND (4-4-2):
6 Patterson: Scare early in the second half when a misplaced pass presented Portsmouth with a chance, but didn’t have much to do
7 Hume: Had one or two nervy moments against Murphy but comfortable for the most part - linked up well with Roberts
7 Mepham: Didn’t give Portsmouth striker Bishop much of a sniff - typically assured
7 O’Nien: First clean sheet in four games rarely looked in doubt
6 Alese: Not particularly tested, though one sloppy pass almost gifted Portsmouth an opportunity - replaced at half-time
6 Neil: Was fortunate Murphy fired over after losing possession in first half - otherwise assured on ball and tireless out of possession
6 Bellingham: Tidy in possession but looked understandably tired late on
6 Roberts: Should have scored in the first half from Aouchiche cross - couldn’t make final pass count but stuck at it, went close after break
5 Aouchiche: Created first-half chance for Roberts and went close with shot from the edge of the box but regressed as the game went on - sloppy in the second half and replaced
7 Mayenda: More evidence that Mayenda is a striker rather than a winger - should have scored and moments of frustration but looks so much more comfortable in central role
7 ISIDOR: Looks much more of a threat with Mayenda up-top alongside him - never looked like missing when he was slipped in by his strike partner for the game’s decisive moment
Subs:
7 Cirkin (for Alese, 46): Made an impact from the bench - much more effective going forward than Alese
Aleksic (for Aouchiche, 80)
Rusyn (for Mayenda, 90+2)
(not used): Moore (gk), Rusyn, Connolly, Aleksic, Hjelde, Johnson, Ogunsuyi, Jones.
PORTSMOUTH (4-2-3-1):
SCHMID 7; Swanson 5 (Devlin, 69, 5), Pack 5, Towler 6, Ogilvie 6; Potts 6 (Moxon, 87), Dozzell 6 (Saydee, 87); Lane 6 (Atkinson, 69, 5), Lang 6, Murphy 6; Bishop 5.
Subs (not used): Archer (gk), Williams, McIntyre, Ritchie, Sorensen.
Man Of The Match: WILSON ISIDOR - By no means at his best, but still came up with the match-winning moment.
