The Sunderland player whose 'excellent touches' stood out - but one who was wasteful
How did the players fare in Sunderland’s 1-0 win at Derby County?
DERBY (4-1-4-1):
Zetterstrom 5; Wilson 6 (Barkhuizen 72), Adams 4, Forsyth 4, Elder 5; Goudmijn 5; Jackson 4 (SALVESEN 58, 6), Thompson 5 (Osborn 58, 6), Harness 5, Mendez-Laing 4 (Blackett-Taylor 58, 5); Yates 4 (Brown 72).
Subs (not used): Vickers (gk), Rooney, Ward, Turley.
SUNDERLAND (4-4-2):
8 Patterson: Made two superb second-half saves as he clawed away goal-bound headers from Salvesen
6 Hume: Wasn’t really troubled for the opening hour, but couldn’t prevent Derby getting crosses into the box late on
7 Mepham: Won some important headers as Derby rallied and made an excellent block from Mendez-Laing’s shot
7 O’Nien: Another all-action defensive display that was full of commitment and full-blooded challenges
6 Cirkin: Helped Sunderland keep Derby out defensively, but should have found the target with an early chance
7 Rigg: Didn’t always comfortable on the right-hand side, but kept plugging away
7 Neil: Helped Sunderland win the midfield battle for most of the game, although he came under pressure late on
7 Bellingham: Produced some nice touches in midfield, but it was also a night when he had to do the dirty work
8 LE FEE: Looks so good on the ball – produced some excellent touches down Sunderland’s left-hand side
8 Mayenda: Always seems to enjoy himself playing as the central striker and produced a clinical finish for the goal
7 Isidor: Will be wondering what on earth his second-half ‘goal’ was ruled out for – ran himself into the ground all night
Subs:
Roberts (for Mayenda, 73)
Ballard (for Cirkin, 73)
Samed (for Rigg, 85)
Hjelde (for Le Fee, 89)
(not used): Moore (gk), Jones, Aleksic, Aouchiche, Ogunsuyi.
Man Of The Match: ENZO LE FEE – Two games in, and Sunderland already look to have got themselves quite a player.
