Sunderland plot ambitious transfer swoop for Sporting winger Marcus Edwards
Sunderland are plotting another ambitious swoop to bolster Regis Le Bris' squad prior to deadline day on Monday.
Reports in Portugal have linked the Black Cats with a move for England youth international Marcus Edwards, and ChronicleLive understands Sunderland are in the mix to sign the former Tottenham Hotspur youngster.
Portuguese media outlet Record claim the Wearsiders, along with fellow Championship side Burnley are pushing to sign the 26-year-old winger after making contact with Sporting. Edwards has scored 24 goals in 120 appearances since his move to the Estadio Jose Alvalade in 2022.

However, he's found game time hard to come by this season with three goals in ten appearances in all competitions. Edwards has been repeatedly linked with a return to the Premier League in recent seasons after impressing in the Portuguese top flight - with Everton said to be keen on a move earlier this month.
The report claims Sunderland are in more advanced talks than the Clarets to sign Edwards this month, with Le Bris keen to bolster his forward line this month. It comes after Black Cats entered negotiations with fellow Championship side Portsmouth for midfielder Adil Aouchiche.
The Frenchman would be free to explore his options having struggled for game time this season. Pompey have held talks with the Black Cats regarding a loan deal for Aouchiche, though Sunderland are hopeful of including a permanent exit clause into talks in the summer.
That being said, a straight loan would be considered by the hierarchy this month. There's also interest in defender Joe Anderson and Sunderland would not stand in his way regarding a possible move away from the Stadium of Light.
League One sides Bristol City and Exeter City have a reported interest in the 23-year-old defender who spent last season on loan with Shrewsbury Town, though the ball is in his court.
