Sunderland sailors make waves at world championship event in Australia

Three Sunderland sailors have been praised for their 'impressive' performances in a sailing world championship in Australia.

The Musto Skiff World Championships which took place at Woollahra Sailing Club in Sydney Harbour, Australia.

The event, requiring the highest level of sailing skills, concluded on Friday, January 10.

Among the fleet, which included boats from around the world, were three Sunderland yachtsmen, Graeme Oliver, Danny Boatman, and Steve Robson.

They all did the city proud, finishing in the top 20.

Fulwell-born Graeme Oliver, 50, led the Sunderland sailors in seventh place, narrowly beating Danny Boatman, who finished in eighth place.

Mr Oliver was given special mention - picking up overall first place for his Masters age group, while being cheered on by his family.

The event was won by the UK-based South African sailor, Andy Tarboton, who displayed great skill throughout the week of races.

The British contingent of sailors delivered an impressive performance.
