The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are meeting in Super Bowl 59, marking the second time in the past three years the squads have faced off for an NFL championship.

Kansas City and Philadelphia went head-to-head in Super Bowl 57, a contest that saw the Chiefs win their second title of the Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid era. Harrison Butker made a game-winning field goal with 8 seconds remaining in regulation to secure the 38-35 Kansas City victory.

Super Bowl 58 was similarly close to the Chiefs vs. Eagles contest, but it featured a different NFC opponent than Philadelphia. Here's what to know about last year's Super Bowl as Kansas City goes for an unprecedented NFL three-peat.

Who was in the Super Bowl last year?

The Chiefs faced the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58. It was the two teams' second meeting of the Mahomes and Reid era, with their first coming in Super Bowl 54 during the 2019 NFL playoffs (contested in 2020).

Super Bowl 58 got off to a slow start with neither team scoring in the first quarter. The 49ers built a 10-3 halftime lead thanks to a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jauan Jennings to Christian McCaffrey, but the Chiefs kept pace with them after halftime.

Jake Moody made a go-ahead 53-yard field goal with 1:53 left in regulation to give the 49ers a 19-16 lead, which forced the Chiefs to mount a two-minute drive to stay alive. Mahomes and Co. couldn't quite punch the ball into the end zone but set up Butker for another last-second field goal, which he made with 3 seconds left in regulation to force the second overtime in Super Bowl history.

McCaffrey and Brock Purdy led the 49ers down field effectively after winning the coin toss. However, San Francisco couldn't score a touchdown, setting Kansas City up with a chance for a game-winning touchdown drive.

The 49ers had an early chance to stop the Chiefs, forcing them into a fourth-and-1 on the do-or-die drive after four plays. Mahomes was able to run for 8 yards to keep the chains moving. From there, Kansas City methodically marched 75 yards down the field for a game-winning touchdown, caught by Mecole Hardman as time expired in overtime.
