Super League clubs could face four potential Challenge Cup opponents in messy draw
The Challenge Cup third-round draw will be made this Tuesday evening despite the majority of last weekend's first-round ties forced into postponements. The adverse weather meant that only three of the 17 ties were played, with a complicated-looking draw now set to take place, which could see some Super League sides drawn against FOUR potential opponents.
Following a restructure of the competition, Super League sides will now enter in the third round at what is now the last 32 stage. They will join 20 lower league winners from the second round and are guaranteed to face them away from home.
The third round is scheduled for 8/9 February, with the second round on the weekend of 25/26 January. The goal was to provide clubs with more unique ties and offer those in a lower league a true incentive and potential financial reward.

However, the draw is now set to be a complicated one, with only Siddal, Blackbrook, and Wests Warriors in the second round as first-round winners. That means the rest of the draw will be an either/or scenario, with third-round ties having many possibilities based on first and second-round results.
Rearranging postponed ties, frozen pitches and freezing tempatures have seen ties rescheduled for this weekend - January 18/19 - with the second round, which sees Championship and League 1 sides enter the competition, taking place the following week.
Here is a rundown of everything you need to know.
What is the makeup of the third round draw?
The third round draw will consist of 32 teams, 12 from Super League and 20 second-round winners from the Championship, League 1, or the community game. Given the situation, they are set to be either/or's, meaning a complicated-looking process is set to take place.
Super League sides could face four potential opponents pending the results of the first and second round ties, some of which line up as the following: GB Police or York Acorn vs. London Chargers or Oulton Raiders. Another example is Stanley Rangers or Hunslet ARLFC vs. West Hull or Edinburgh Eagles.
The second round ties featuring Championship and League 1 clubs leave, in some cases, three potential opponents for Super League sides. For instance, a top-flight club could be drawn against the following: Lock Lane or Doncaster Toll Bar vs. Hunslet. There is also the chance for just two potential third-round opponents given all Championship/League 1 ties. For instance: London Broncos vs. Goole Vikings.
Where is the third round draw?
The Challenge Cup third-round draw will be made in Warrington on Tuesday 14 January. It will take place at the Spectrum headquarters of competition sponsors Betfred. The draw for the group stage of the Women’s Challenge Cup will also be made.

The draw will see four groups of three clubs made, with fixtures taking place over three consecutive weekends in April (5/6, 12/13, and 19/20). The winners and runners-up of each group will progress to the quarter-finals.
The ‘big four’ of St Helens, Leeds, Wigan, and York will be seeded for the draw and will avoid each other in the group stage. The other clubs in the cup are fellow Super League outfits Barrow, Leigh, Huddersfield, and Warrington, plus Cardiff, Featherstone, London, and Sheffield from the lower leagues.
