Ryan Giles has been given permission to undergo a medical at Middlesbrough ahead of his proposed move from Hull City to their Championship rivals, but with the deal on loan and not a permanent as had been expected.

City and Boro have agreed a loan deal which will see the 24-year-old left-back make a return to Teesside and link up once again with boss Michael Carrick, finally getting one of their top transfer targets over the line after months of talks, though Hull Live understands there is no option to buy in the deal.

Giles joined City on an initial loan from Luton Town last January with an obligation to buy in the summer at a cost of around £4m, but discussions were held back in June and July about him going back to the Riverside Stadium, with terms agreed between the two clubs and the player himself keen on the move.

City eventually halted those talks, and the Telford-born performer remained at the MKM Stadium, going on to play 16 times this season under Tim Walter, Andy Dawson and, more recently, Ruben Selles, starting 11 times. In total, Giles has made 35 appearances for the Tigers, clocking up just one assist, having struggled to recapture the form he enjoyed at Boro when Carrick's side made it to the play-off semi-final two seasons ago.

Selles has given the green light to Giles to return to the North East, and will now prioritise signing cover for the left-back area, with Charlie Taylor a top target to come in and replace him before the window closes on Monday week at 11pm.

The Tigers have agreed terms with Premier League bottom side Southampton over a loan move for Taylor, but are awaiting a decision from the York-born defender, with him thought to be weighing up his options for the remainder of the season, though it's not expected to be concluded this side of the weekend.

City will continue to operate with Matty Jacob and Sean McLoughlin as left-back cover at Sheffield United on Friday night, while Cody Drameh and Lewie Coyle (currently injured) can also operate on that side if required.

Ryan Longman, meanwhile, is in North Wales to complete a permanent move to Wrexham after the League One promotion hopefuls agreed on a fee in the region of £500,000.

Longman, who bagged the winning goal at Blackburn Rovers just after Christmas, is out of contract at City at the end of the season and hadn't been offered fresh terms on the deal he signed in January 2022 when his loan move from Brighton and Hove Albion was made permanent.

The winger had the option of joining City's Championship rivals Oxford United but turned down the chance to link up with Gary Rowett's outfit and, instead, move to the Racecourse Ground.

"Ryan Giles and Ryan Longman have both been given permission today to go and finalise their deal with other clubs and take their medical," Selles told Hull Live on the eve of the trip to Bramall Lane. If there is an agreement and everything is done, hopefully everyone will know."
