Arsenal will have split focus this weekend, taking on Wolverhampton Wanderers whilst Mikel Arteta has also announced his intentions for the January transfer market.

The Gunners are in need of some Premier League redemption this weekend. Relinquishing a two-goal lead at home to Aston Villa seven days ago left a sour taste in the mouth, especially as beforehand title rivals Liverpool clutched victory out of nowhere.

The game will see them battle Matheus Cunha - one of the strikers passionately linked with a switch to The Emirates Stadium throughout the month.

Asked on Friday about recruiting a forward before February 3 deadline, Arteta responded: "My opinion is clear, we lost two very important players in Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus so we lack goals, we lack people, we lack options in the front line, it's clear.

"If we can get the right player, that's what we're actively looking at. Any player? No. Someone that makes us better and has an impact on the team. We need some help, we're very short already but the team is coping. We have to do what is right for the club."

So as we reach a pivotal moment this January, football.london have taken a look at some of the stories doing the rounds. We have also given our thoughts on the situations.

Nypan battle

Whilst it was a striker signing Arteta spoke of specifically, the latest exciting update to drop in North London was Arsenal's place in the battle for Norwegian talent Sverre Nypan.

Linked with numerous top clubs, the Gunners are said to have opened discussions over the 18-year-old's breakout move being from Rosenborg to the Emirates Stadium.

However, challenging rumour has spread that the player has boarded a flight bound for Manchester, where he will treat with Man City officials and learn their proposal.

Interestingly, Nypan has never spoken about moving to either club but he has done with perhaps their shared biggest rival of the Premier League era.

A boyhood supporter, he told the United Norway podcast last summer: "It would obviously be a dream come true to play for Manchester United.

"I'm aware United has shown some interest. But I'm quite adamant that I don't want to open that door yet. I want to focus on Rosenborg and not think too far ahead."

football.london says: When a talent like Nypan comes along, it is time to forget what priorities Arsenal may have in the market and go all-out for the talent. If he is willing to negotiate with Man City and put aside that love to their cross-city rivals, he will feel the same about Arsenal. Losing out to a direct rival when Martin Odegaard can be offered up as mentor would feel like a disappointing missed opportunity. If there is one thing Arsenal can offer Nypan, it is a clear pathway to the top of the game.

Cunha competition outed

As mentioned, Cunha has been on Arsenal's radar. Arteta also refused to be drawn into a discussion of his talents on Friday.

"I prefer not to talk about the individual, I prefer to talk about the collective and they have a lot of talent."

Previously it has been stated six Premier League clubs have established interest in the Brazilian. The Gunners are of course one, then Man United and Nottingham Forest have followed in other twists to the tale.

Three remained nameless, until now, as The Daily Mail published a report introduced Aston Villa to the fray. It is said that Jhon Duran's possible sale this month could cause them to turn to their West Midlands rivals for a direct replacement.

Also named as suitors are Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

football.london says: Now unlike plenty of forwards linked, Cunha is actually one of Premier League pedigree. He is going to be one to watch over the coming week or so. If it is Champions League football he desires then Arsenal hold the advantage, and it can't be denied he is exactly what is needed for the remainder of the season.
