Swansea City are closing in on a loan move for Burnley defender Hannes Delcroix.

Luke Williams' squad is looking threadbare with the search for a new centre-back a top priority. The January transfer window has seen the Swans linked with Wycombe Wanderers and Wales defender Joe Low, but a deal now looks unlikely to happen this month with the two clubs so far unable to agree on his valuation.

Last week, Williams revealed he was going on a scouting trip to the Netherlands to assess another defensive target, but this ultimately did not transpire due to the player in question not being involved in the match he was due to watch. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here.

But now, three weeks into the window, it looks as though the Swans will bring a new defensive addition through the doors this month, with a loan deal for Delcroix edging closer.

The 25-year-old - who has one cap for the Belgian national side - previously played for Anderlecht and RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch Eredivisie before moving to Turf Moor in the summer of 2023.

Under former boss Vincent Kompany, he came straight into the Clarets team but then lost his place with his minutes becoming increasingly limited. He has since falling down the pecking order under Scott Parker, with the manager admitting that the player would likely leave the club in some capacity in January having not featured so far this season due to injury.

Asked if Delcroix and fellow centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal would benefit from loan moves, Parker said: “There may be an option there, yes. I mean, both players really have got the quality to play football. They are both very, very good football players.

“From my position, of course I'd love to keep them here and be part of things. But I also understand what stage they’re at and whether game time is a big thing for them, which I'm sure it is.

“They want to try and play some minutes and it's a position in our squad that we are pretty stacked in terms of defenders, so there may be an option there.”

The move comes after Williams said the club "are getting closer" to making an addition to the squad, as he explained: "Of course we have to rely on the other party involved, and often in the window, players. clubs and agents try to eke things out to make sure they get the possible decision.

"So we have to keep trying to get these deals done, because it's clear we need more depth. And as I keep saying, we need the correct level of depth otherwise we are bringing players into the club that aren't helping us to move forward."
