Swindon Town have responded to complaints over problems in The Don Rogers Stand during the game against Crewe Alexandra.

Following freezing weather across the country leading into the home match on Saturday, January 11 there was difficulty in the home end ahead of the game as parts of The Don Rogers Stand had to be closed off because of the conditions.

Some fans still reported the slippery conditions in the stand and despite a cordon having been placed over the areas which had been closed, this was knocked down leading to many still using their normal seats.

After being asked about what precautions were taken for these issues by The Adver, a spokesperson for the club said: “The adverse weather conditions evolved over a short period of time, condensation started dripping from the DRS roof onto the terracing and freezing, as the freezing fog drifted into the Ground. The lower sections were salted in the morning but the water started to re-freeze.”

Actions were taken with “extensive salting” done in all areas of the stand except for those which had been cordoned off with those unable to access their own seats able to move to empty ones, sales of tickets in the stand were stopped, fans were not able to leave the concourse and go into the seating area until the salting was completed, and messages were delivered over the PA system to inform supporters to be careful and also that they may not have access to their normal seat.

A statement also said: “A Sports Ground Safety Authority Inspector was undertaking a matchday inspection and was consulted throughout. They were satisfied that we had taken precautions, so far as was reasonably practicable, but they also noted that fans had broken through the hazard tape even though they had been advised not to.”

There was also an issue with long queues building up ahead of kick-off outside The Don Rogers Stand for the second consecutive home match.

When asked about what had caused this by The Adver, a club spokesperson said that there was no issue with the turnstiles themselves but the “main issue” was that a majority of fans arrived close to kick-off time.

Members of the Official Supporters Club reviewed the timeline presented by the club and could not see any issues with the turnstiles.

The spokesperson added: “Fans should be advised to arrive at the Ground at least half an hour before the kick-off time so that if there are queues, they should be through the turnstiles well before kick-off.”
