Swindon might need 'educated gamble' to add experience to squad
Ian Holloway said that he might have to take an educated risk on the fitness of some players to bring in the experience he needs at Swindon Town.
As Swindon search for any external help to add to their squad during the January transfer window, Holloway has made clear that he is looking to add experience to the group.
Progress on that front has been slow in the early days of January, with the Town boss admitting that finding the right fit was difficult and that he has no interest in bringing in a player who would not be an upgrade on the current squad.
In December, Holloway said he wanted: “They have to do it themselves, when you get the likes of Grant Hall and Ollie Clarke coming back into your group then it is a lot better.
“They are our two most senior players, with the greatest of respect, the club should have four of them.
“I should be able to pick a team with at least two of them in to help the young ones but our squad hasn’t got that.”
But as Holloway has gone about finding more leaders to add to his squad, he said that those who have the know-how he is searching for are not all in peak condition.
He said: “What is difficult at the minute is finding the experienced players that I need who are still fit and won’t be injured.
“They do not grow on trees and I might have to take a bit of a gamble, but it will be an educated gamble and I won’t do anything that won’t improve the team because why would I change somebody here for somebody who is not as good as the person that I have already got?
“Now we are starting to look like we should have looked in the first place.
“Have you heard the song Camp Grenada? It might be like that because I am just enjoying how we are playing right now.
“We have scored nine goals in the last three home games, who would have thought that?
“I am in a great place right now but I still have to cast at the right time to try and do that, today isn’t the right time because games are going on and decisions need to be made on the ones that we have already got in the next few days.”
