Swiss teacher to spend World Darts Championship jackpot on new windows and beers thanks to Damon Heta's 9 darter
Damon Heta’s nine-dart special has won a Swiss fan some beers and new windows for his house.
The Aussie No.1 took the roof off the Ally Pally with his perfect leg against Luke Woodhouse at the PDC World Darts Championship. His magical work sparked a cash bonanza for a second time in the tournament after Dutch ace Christian Kist hit one in the opening week of the tournament.
Tournament sponsors Paddy Power are shelling out £180,000 every time there’s a nine. The money is split £60,000 to Heta. £60,000 to Prostate Cancer UK with their BIGGER 180 campaign and £60,000 to a randomly chosen fan. Railway worker Kris was selected randomly by camera on the big screens after the Kist hit and this time it picked out Mauro, a 37-year-old teacher from Switzerland, who banked the loot from Heta's haul. He said: “I’ve just taken over my family’s house.
We will use the £60,000 to get new windows, it’s quite boring but we need stuff for the house! I’ll also cover every expense for the whole group and use it to get some more beers! That’s it!”
“I don’t have any real words, it’s just unbelievable. I told my friends and family that I’d pay for the whole trip if I won it and I could never imagine that I actually would! I’m very happy, over the moon.
“It’s our third time at Alexandra Palace. We came to watch some football and some darts. It was a nice trip with the lads and all the good stuff and winning it is just amazing, incredible.”
Prostate Cancer UK Chief Executive Laura Kerby said: “We have been blown away at the brilliance from the world’s best darts players at Ally Pally, and a second nine-darter of the tournament made it a perfect end to 2024.
“After Christian Kist set the ball rolling, there have been a few near misses, but we were as excited as the 3,000 people inside the arena when Damon etched his name into the history books and helped raise another £60,000 for Prostate Cancer UK.
“With every 180 hit by players in the tournament Prostate Cancer UK earns £1,000 and this extra windfall, which stands at £120,000 to date, will also go towards our groundbreaking screening trial, TRANSFORM. Led by world-leading experts, TRANSFORM will find the best way to screen men for the disease - so that one day all men will be invited for regular tests and more men will find it early enough to be cured.
“This iconic tournament has seen us make a huge difference to men affected by prostate cancer, one maximum at a time. And the addition of two perfect legs can only help us more. We thank Paddy Power for their incredible life-changing support and Damon for his fantastic feat. Long may the iconic call of ‘180’ from the Ally Pally stage continue.”
