The Isle of Wight's table tennis action saw league leaders Ryde C drop points against struggling Newport Vics B.

The match, which took place earlier this week, finished 8-2 in favour of Ryde, but Newport's Rob Warren and Barry Joyce each secured victories against Ryde's Joe Chapman.

Meanwhile, second-placed Ryde Rankers achieved a 10-0 victory over clubmates Ryde Goshawks, who were a player short.

The Rankers' Lewis Johnstone overcame his father Martin in a five-set match.

The Rankers remain 17 points behind Ryde C but have a game in hand.

In another match, third-placed Ryde B easily defeated Newport Vics A, losing only one game, with Vic's Dave Hilliam beating Bryce Wilson in five sets.

In the second division, leaders Ryde Revellers extended their lead at the top of the table to 11 points over Ryde Detonators with a 9-1 win against Ryde Rascals.

The Detonators also had an 8-2 win against Ryde Rockets.

Third-placed Havenstreet B remain contenders for the top spot after a 9-1 win against Shorwell Spinners.

In the third division, St Lawrence Lizards moved within a point of table leaders Wroxall Warriors after beating Ryde Rustics by seven games to three.

This was the only match completed in the division this week.

Meanwhile, the handicapped singles was held on Friday, January 24.

First up were the group stages, with six groups comprising five or six players in each, and the top two of each group went through to the knockout stages.

There were players of all ages and standards from all three divisions taking part, and the handicapped format gave everyone a chance to progress in the competition.

The quarter finalists comprised five players from the first division, two from the second and one from the third.

In the semi finals, top Island player Alex Rorke met Paul Cates from the third division, while the other semi final was an all first division meeting between Tom Johnson and Bryce Wilson.

After two close games, the final will be between Alex Rorke and Tom Johnson.

It will be played on April 30 at the IW Table Tennis Centre at Smallbrook.
