Taunton school team wins South West cup match to secure championship
A Taunton school football team secured victory in the South West Inter-District Schools Cup.
The Taunton District Schools under-13s made the long journey to Mounts Bay Academy, in West Cornwall, for the match.
The team exhibited promising skills, pressing high and controlling the midfield, particularly in the first half.
Josh Hawkins opened the scoring, neatly finishing a flowing move past the keeper.
However, the team conceded a goal on the counter-attack, bringing the score to 1-1.
Luca Sebastian then scored with a strike from distance, restoring the lead to 2-1.
Theo Webster further increased the lead with a delightful ball around the onrushing goalkeeper, making it 3-1.
In the second half, the hosts made a determined effort to turn the game around, committing more players forward.
Despite having more chances, including attempts from Archie Billet, Lucas Middleton, and Austin Payne, the Taunton team found it hard to break through due to good goalkeeping.
The hosts managed to score again, making it 3-2, but could not equalise, thanks to the efforts of the Taunton defence.
Oliver Ball, Ethan Sheppard, Archie Barter, Oakley Yarde, Jacob Hopwood, Ali Barnard, and Hayden Yarde, alongside Sammy Woodhill and Kaan Dogan in midfield, held firm.
Although the Taunton team had more opportunities to extend their lead, including a good free kick from Hayden Yarde, they managed to secure victory.
Having already secured success in their first season together in the South West fixtures, the team has Somerset Inter-District fixtures still to play this season.
Billet was named man of the match for being a constant threat and adapting his game to suit the team's strategy on the day.
