Taunton Town were eliminated from the Somerset Senior Cup on Tuesday (January 21) night after defeat at Weston-super-Mare.

The Peacocks, who were the defending champions going into this season, did take the lead in the first half but two goals in the final half hour of the game saw the Seagulls advance.

Manager Richard Luffman made six changes to the starting XI from the side which drew with Wimborne – one of which was forced on Taunton with Jack Rice’s loan coming to an end. Josh Gould, Nick Grimes, Latrell Humphrey-Ewers, Owen Brain and Jayden Nielsen all dropped out of the starting XI.

In came Lloyd Irish, Ollie Woodhouse, Tom Purrington, Chris Zebroski, debutant Ollie Dewsbury and Harry Gardner. There were some familiar faces in the Weston line up as Ollie Chamberlain and Nick McCootie lined up against their former side, as did Morgan Lewis who was on loan at Taunton this season.

The Peacocks made a good start with Chris Zebroski and Jack Matthews both having attempts at goal which missed the target. Taunton did take the lead on 23 minutes when Zebroski netted his first goal for the club.

Weston began to create some chances after the goal but the score remained 1-0 at half time.

In the second half, Lloyd Irish was called into action a few times to keep Taunton in front and the National League South side did have a shot blocked on the line. But the Seagulls were level on the hour mark as Dylan Kadji scored from 25 yards after a corner was cleared.

Weston eventually got their second goal on 86 minutes as Jamie Soule got on the end of a Morgan Lewis pass to slot past Lloyd Irish.

Taunton Town bow out of the competition they won last season and will now look ahead to their away match at Southern League table toppers Merthyr Town on Saturday (January 25).
