Huddersfield Town signing Tawanda Chirewa admits he “can’t wait to help this team progress” after joining the club on deadline day.

The Terriers have brought in the attacker on loan from Wolves, with the 21-year-old set to spend the remainder of the season with Town.

Chirewa joins a side who sit fifth in the League One table, with the Terriers aiming to seal a return to the Championship at the end of the campaign.

The new recruit is eager to play whatever part he can to get his new loan side back into the second tier, with the attacker telling HTTV: “I’m so happy to be here to be honest, I can’t wait to get going.

“It’s an amazing time for me (to join) personally I’d say. Especially with the way the squad is going and the position we’re in, I think we’ve got a big chance of going up this year, and I kind of want to help them. Hopefully, if I do a small bit or if it’s a big bit, whatever I do to get us across the line, I’m willing to do.

“I spoke to them at the back end of last week (fellow Wolves loanees Joe Hodge and Nigel Lonwijk), and there’s been nothing but good words about this place, and about how the fans, the players and staff are just great people, and it’s made me want to come here. Obviously I spoke to the manager, and he just kind of pulled me even closer to coming here, and now I’m here, I just can’t wait to help this team progress.

“I’d say I’m at a stage in my career right now where I’ve got to kind of show everyone what I’m about. Obviously the club (Wolves) has their own views of me, and I’m so grateful for it, but I feel as though hopefully Huddersfield can see what I’m about, and the rest of the league can see what I’m about, and I can help Huddersfield get back to the Championship where they belong.”

Chirewa is embarking on the second loan spell of his career, having spent the first half of the campaign with Championship outfit Derby County, before being recalled by Wolves last month.

The 21-year-old came through Ipswich Town’s youth system prior to joining the Old Gold in September 2023, with the attacker having since featured ten times for the Premier League outfit.

Discussing what he aims to bring to his new side, Chirewa said: “Something which is I think unquestionable from footballers – the desire to make the most of their career, the ambition, and also I’d say the most important, how hard they work. I’d say that’s three things I try to always have, I never drop in those three things on the pitch I think.

“I’ll work my socks off to help the team, and I have an ambition to help us get up the league, and the desire to be the best I can be every day.

“I’d say I’m an attacking player obviously, I’m someone that likes to create things, score goals, get assists. I’m good in one-v-one duels I’d say with the ball, and I’m also someone who can bring others to the game, so I can obviously pass the ball quite well I think.

“I think I can work hard, I can have that bit of bite as well, something which I think you need especially playing for Huddersfield Town – a bit of aggression, a bit of desire. Just because we’re maybe a bigger team than other clubs, they think we’re going to be a bit more soft, but we’re not, we’re going to be even harder than they are.”
