Wealdstone manager Matt Taylor praised the collective resilience of his squad after they came from behind to secure a deserved 2-2 draw at Sutton United.

Joshua Grant opened the scoring for Taylor’s side, but strikes either side of half-time from Sutton’s Lewis Simper and Will Davies saw the Stones go behind.

Former Tottenham Hotspur academy player Kallum Cesar then levelled things up to snatch a point.

“First of all, Sutton is a really good team. They’ve got some really good footballers, and Steve (Morison) has got them playing in a way that suits the players they’ve recruited,” Taylor told the club website.

“To come here and come away with a point is pleasing, especially with the depleted group we’ve got at the moment. The energy, the effort, the desire, and the application that our players put in was fantastic.

"What I liked more than anything else is that we’ve given away two goals through errors that we’ve made; however, our players never gave up. That’s a testament to them.

“I feel that for all the tactical and technical detail that they have to take on, they’re a group that is immensely hard-working for each other. That’s what you saw.

"You saw a group of players that knows the club, right at this moment, have their backs against the wall. They went out and gave everything for each other.”

The Stones bided their time at 2-1 down and caught the hosts on the break as they tried to kill the game, with Cesay squeezing a header in at the back post to bring the away side right back into it.

“They continued to believe in themselves and what we asked them to do. The goal we scored is contentious in the dressing room right now, whether it was Kallum’s or Sam Ashford’s,” joked Taylor.

“I for one don’t care. It’s in the back of the net, but they didn’t give in. When you’ve got a group that shows that real togetherness and desire to want to run for each other, I think you’ve got a chance at whatever level of football you play at. I’m really proud of the players’ efforts. I thought they were excellent."

And Taylor alluded to the possibility of bringing new players in during the January transfer window as availability continues to be an issue.

He added: “It’s been well documented that the squad is quite a bit smaller than we want at the moment. There are reasons behind that, that I can’t affect.

"At the same time, I’m acutely aware if we’re going to add players to this group, they need to be good people as well as really good players. You can see from tonight that when they get it right in those big moments, they take them.”

The Stones welcome Hartlepool United to Grosvenor Vale this Saturday as they look to secure a first National League win since December 21.
