Teacher taking on challenge so extraordinary Everton players couldn't believe it
This is the teacher and Evertonian who is running 10k a day for one year in his bare feet, in support of the Alzheimer’s Society.
Phill Hayward, a PE teacher at St Michael’s and All Angels and Our Lady of Pity, has just past 200 days of his gargantuan challenge and shows no signs of stopping.
Having previously completed 10k a day five years ago for mental health charity, Wirral Mind, he decided to push himself further and do the challenge again in his bare feet.

The motivation stems from his grandad who will have suffered from Alzheimer’s for 10 years once the challenge is completed.
Whilst taking on the challenge, the Wirral based teacher maintained a full-time job, battled dark nights and freezing weather, and marched on with his love for Everton.
Crediting his supportive partner and family, Hayward has run on beaches, fields, parks and the street and has put on hold any nights or weekends away so he can run on known terrain.
He said: “It can be tough mentally, getting up and out in the cold conditions, and repeated runs can get very boring but I’m quite strong.
“Sometimes I’ll have football training, I’ll run before or after that, but it’s been difficult with my following of Everton as well.
“I went down to watch us play Spurs, the coach left at 7am and then I was in London all day, so when I got back late at night I went straight out with a head torch on to make sure I was on track.”
His dedication to the challenge was exemplified over the Christmas period, as he completed back-to-back runs in the space of hours in between the 24th and the 25th in order to have a full Christmas Day with his family.
As the fundraiser has progressed, he has received widespread messages of encouragement from all over Merseyside, but has thanked the support handed by Everton.
He added: “I’ve been to Finch Farm and ran there and I got to meet the players.
“I met James Tarkowski and Ashley Young and they couldn’t believe I was just running in my bare feet.
“They were really good to take time out of their schedules, which I’ll always keep with me as I look up to them.
“The club have kept in touch and I’ve been thinking about running around Goodison prior to a game but I’ll wait for the warmer weather.”
With the challenge passing the 200 days mark, Hayward has been setting small goals as he gets closer to the finish line.
He said; “The next goal I’ll be looking forward to is February half-term.
“Those mini goals will get me through, mentally I am strong but if I didn’t have that mindset I don’t know how I’d get through.”
