A Hampshire teenager has triumphed at a European karate championship.

Tom Klemz, a sixth-form student at Burgate School, won the World Karate Federation Junior Kata European Championship title in Bielsko Biala, Poland on Monday.

The 17-year-old, who holds dual nationality, defeated competitors from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, and a world silver medalist from Spain to reach the final. He then secured victory against the Polish competitor with a score of 42.8 to 40.2.

Tom has said: "I am so proud to have won this medal for France and feel really fortunate to be surrounded by such an amazing team: my club coaches, Marc and Yves Ruelle, my physical coach, my mental coach and all the French team coaches.

"Although it is hard work to combine intense training and school studies, I make sure I keep on track and am so excited about the future!"
