RAMPANT Weymouth secured their first home league win at the 15th attempt, stunning Welling United with a five-star display at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Welling looked assured in the opening stages and had a goal for James Alabi disallowed.

Weymouth responded with Brooklyn Genesini’s fine bending effort before Jake McCarthy tucked home 29 minutes in.

Their two-goal lead was short lived as Alabi headed home prior to a dreadful second half for the Wings, sparked by a calamitous drop by keeper Dylan Berry as Josh McQuoid pounced for 3-1.

McCarthy’s penalty put the result beyond doubt and Genesini’s blockbuster added the cherry on top during a rare afternoon of delight for Terras fans this season.

Weymouth made three changes as Euan Pollock, Brooklyn Genesini and Corey Jordan all returned, while Tom Bearwish (suspended) and Ibrahim Meite missed out completely and Harrison Day dropped to the bench.

But there was positive news on the bench as McQuoid was recalled following a hamstring injury, joining Day, Malachi Linton, Jordan Maguire-Drew and Lloyd Thomas among the substitutes.

Weymouth ending their barren run of 14 winless home league games looked a long way off as Welling made a quick start.

The Wings regularly found gaps in Weymouth’s midfield, with winger Daniel Martin particularly impressive.

And the hosts were relieved in the 16th minute when Alabi’s pinpoint header was ruled out for offside, before Will Buse stood up well to halt Finn Ballard-McBride’s slaloming run.

Instead, Weymouth went 1-0 up against the run of play following their first corner of the match.

Taken short, Diamond Edwards spotted Genesini in oceans of space 25 yards out and the ex-Swindon defender controlled before sending a beautiful curling effort into the right corner.

However, Weymouth doubled their advantage in the 29th minute as McCarthy pounced, arrowing home left-footed from an acute angle after Jordan Thompson’s blocked shot.

An entertaining first half kept on giving as Welling needed fewer than three minutes to hit back, Alabi finally getting his goal by heading home a Martin cross in off the bar.

Having conceded twice, Welling did not alter their attacking approach as Winfield swept wide from a corner routine with Martin once more the orchestrator.

After the interval, Weymouth had to solve a defensive puzzle caused by Jordan, whose cut to the head forced him off without a substitute defender as backup.

Berry attempted to catch a corner but made a complete meal of it, dropping the ball and failing to gather the rebound as McQuoid bundled in from around two yards out.

The goal restored Weymouth’s two-goal cushion but the manner of the concession appeared to deflate the visitors as Weymouth dominated.

Sensing a fourth, Thompson ran into space six yards out and nearly connected with Ben Greenwood’s cross from the left but a similar delivery was to yield greater results for the Terras on 71 minutes.

Pollock was the spark, nipping in front of Riccardo di Trolio to control a cross and draw a foul for the penalty, tucked away by McCarthy via the woodwork for 4-1.

The former Yeovil defender even sniffed a hat-trick late on, powering a volley at goal which Berry kept out at full stretch.

Welling were also indebted to Winfield for a heroic block on the line deep in stoppage time, the skipper hurling himself at sub Day to prevent what looked a certain goal.

However, it was beyond question Weymouth’s afternoon as the Terras, in some style, ended a 10-month wait for a regulation victory at home in the league.
