'Like a terrier' Hull FC spine trio praised as team attitude delights John Cartwright
John Cartwright has praised three members of his Hull FC spine following Friday night’s victory at Catalans Dragons. The Black and Whites produced a superb performance to defeat the French side at the Stade Gilbert Brutus, with Cade Cust scoring two tries in the 24-4 win.
The star of the show, there were no surprises for Cartwright, who has worked with the player before in Australia at Manly Sea Eagles. The same applies for Aidan Sezer and John Asiata, two players that also worked with Cartwright during their time in the NRL.
Praising the shape of his side, a lot of traffic went through Asiata, with Hull, after defending superbly for large parts of the game, getting their reward with good ball opportunities, going wide, and playing direct off their new loose forward.

Speaking post-match, Cartwright said: "I thought Cade Cust was exactly what I thought he would be. He's a super competitor. His two tries were all effort-based; he's like a terrier—he chases everything.
"Aidan Sezer also kicked well. He got us around the field well, and John Asiata led with Aidan from the front. He played big minutes. He was good defensively, and when we got a bit of possession and we had a bit of fuel in the tank, I thought we were pretty sharp with John around the ball."
Commenting on Hull’s defensive foundation, Cartwright was delighted with the attitude of his players, who were up against a big Catalans team. However, the head coach was also keen to point out the early nature of the season, with a long way still to go.
"They (Catalans) are a dangerous side," Cartwright continued. "They've recruited really well—high-profile State of Origin players—they've got a lot of offloading, and they're really hard to defend too. Luke Keary keeps you honest—he always keeps you honest.
“That was the most pleasing thing (defensive attitude), but it's round one of 27. It's a great start, but to get the win in the bank away from home, I'm sure we'll be better for the run. I don't think a lot of sides will come down here and get two points, so it's a big bonus for us.
"The first half in particular—the Catalans played really consistent footy. They're a big, strong side; they had possession, and they really kept us working hard to come out of our own end."
Cartwright also praised his two wingers, Harvey Barron and Lewis Martin. The head coach added: "I thought our two wingers were tremendous. They played tough, and they took some really tough carries. They got us back into the game. Those carries; a line of 12 coming at them, but they just kept bringing the ball back at them all night."
