TGL owner says league's potential is 'unlimited,' teases expansion teams, women joining

Arthur Blank is bullish on what TGL can become.

The owner of Atlanta Drive GC, Justin Thomas' TGL team, has high hopes for the future of the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy-backed indoor simulator league. On Monday night, his Atlanta Drive beat Boston Common 6-3 to clinch a playoff spot in the league's inaugural season.

During the match, ESPN's Marty Smith interviewed Blank and asked him, "What do you think the potential is for TGL as we move forward?" Blank's answer makes it seem like TGL is doing some big things behind the scenes as it nears the end of Year No. 1.

"It's really unlimited. I know that's a really big word," Blank said. "Reality is, the league will continue to expand. There will be other teams added to it over time. There will probably be other formats. Potentially, there will be gals involved, which will be great for the game as female golfers are playing more and more on-course and off-course.

"To me, it's really, really unlimited."

The first year of TGL has been pretty successful. As is the case with every startup, there have been a few bumps here in there, but when the matches are close and the best golfers in the world are going shot-for-shot with one another, it makes a great viewing experience on television, and reviews from inside the SoFi Center have been overwhelmingly positive.

Blank's comments teasing expansion would be notable. TGL has six teams and 24 players currently, but could more be on the way? What about a Dallas team with Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth, as Smylie Kaufman and the latter discussed on a podcast episode last week.

His comments about adding women into the league are also exciting. Imagine a team with Nelly Korda, Jeeno Thitikul, Lydia Ko and Charley Hull, some of the LPGA's best players. And that's the fun with simulator golf is anything is possible.

Blank is correct: TGL's potential is unlimited. We'll see how the year finishes, but if the closing stretch and playoff can live up to the bar that has been set during the regular season, it could give the league massive momentum heading into the offseason.

"For the first year, it has been a great success, and the players are loving it," Blank continued. "It gives fans an opportunity to see players in a different environment, to see their openness and willingness to exchange with each other, thing we normally don't see when they're on-course. They've very quiet, only talking to their caddies. They have that opportunity now to see them with each other and their teammates and the other team. It's great. It's another side of getting close to our players.

"That means so much to our fans. Getting to know the players, not only seeing them play brilliantly but getting to know them personally and their personalities.
