'Thanks for your concern' Pep Guardiola shuts down talk of Man City nightmare

PARIS, FRANCE - JANUARY 22: Coach of Manchester City Pep Guardiola speaks to the media during the post-match press conference following the UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD7 match between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Manchester City at Parc des Princes stadium on January 22, 2025 in Paris, France. Pep Guardiola refused to entertain questions about Manchester City crashing out of the Champions League.

The Blues have had an awful campaign, taking just one point from their last four games to leave them outside of the top 24 teams with just one match remaining. They know that victory at home to Club Brugge on Wednesday will guarantee them a spot in the play-offs to try and make the last-16, although given their form in the competition there can be no guarantees they will do it.

Having qualified for the Champions League knockouts for 11 consecutive years and won it in 2023, it would be seriously embarrassing to the club if they crashed out at the group stage - especially given there have been two extra games in this new format. There will also be financial consequences of not making it as far.

While City are 90 minutes from those possibilities becoming a reality, Guardiola was not willing to talk about it as he focuses his attention on explaining Club Brugge weaknesses to his players instead. "It's not personal for me, it's for the club," he said.

"It would not be good but I'm not thinking about that right now. I appreciate your concern for if we don't qualify but I think we are going to do it.

"I'm not naive enough to know how important this competition is financially for the club but we want to try and go though for sporting reasons."

City will be favourites to beat Brugge but their Belgian opponents are ahead of them in the table and need a point to guarantee their place in the play-offs.
