Thiago Silva addresses Chelsea future as contract nears expiry date

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva says he is “super relaxed” about his future.

Silva’s contract at Stamford Bridge is due to expire this summer and the 39-year-old has been linked with a return to Brazil. Fluminense are interested in the centre-back, who began his career at the Brazilian club, but it remains to be seen if he stays at Chelsea.

Silva has been a regular under Mauricio Pochettino this season and has started all but two of the Blues’ Premier League games. The defender became Chelsea’s oldest-ever player this season, but he has cooled talk he is ready to retire.

Asked about his future, Silva said: “I don’t have anything scheduled for later. There’s nothing scheduled here. I’m just looking to have fun. We know [my career] is almost over, but it’s not the end yet, so pick the right time.

“I’m still able to maintain a good performance. My numbers are good. This gives me peace of mind to continue. Now, the future belongs to God. Let’s finish well here, this and those four months and see what has to happen going forward. But I’m super relaxed about that.

“[My relationship with the Chelsea fans] is a source of great pride. In such a short time I managed to conquer them in such a passionate way. We can say that, right?

“It was very, very fast and I am happy every time I play here. It’s different and special and emotional. I know that with each game that ends I have a feeling that it’s ending, so that makes me a little sad. But happy with the performance on the field, which is the most important.”

Silva started on Wednesday and played the full 90 minutes as Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 6-1 to reach the Carabao Cup final, and he is determined to go all the way at Wembley.

“Now we have another final at Wembley. If I’m not mistaken, the three times I went there, I lost all three,” he said. “So, I think it is time to win, right?”
