'I think Ruben Amorim would be a good coach if he was in charge of Liverpool instead of Man Utd'
Glenn Hoddle has claimed Ruben Amorim would ‘make it work’ at Liverpool if he were manager of the Reds.
The Portuguese was among those interviewed over the vacant Liverpool position ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s departure and was seen as one of the frontrunners. Liverpool’s hierarchy were impressed by Amorim but opted for Arne Slot as they felt he was closer stylistically to the outgoing manager.
But even then, Amorim’s arrival at a Premier League club felt inevitable and he had talks with West Ham United last year. Instead, the 39-year-old ended up at Old Trafford in November and is struggling to cope with the chaos that overwhelmed his predecessors at Manchester United.

After Sunday’s 3-1 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion, Amorim claimed the group he is working is the ‘worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United’. Reports have also emerged that he damaged a TV during a furious post-match outburst.
Despite that, Hoddle feels the issue at United is not the manager and said Amorim could have succeeded on Merseyside.
“I think if he goes into a Liverpool, Man City or Arsenal or even a Newcastle, his system, he’d make it work and we’d all be going ‘Wow, what a good coach’,” the former England boss said on the Kelly & Wrighty Show.
“At the moment it’s not going to work at Manchester United, and that’s why I think he wanted to come in next season and he wanted to get these plans, but now it’s an experiment for him. He’s thinking, ‘Who am I going to keep?’. He’s inherited that squad; it’s not his squad, and it won’t be until next season.”
United’s loss at the weekend was the seventh from 15 matches during Amorim’s tenure. The Reds Devils are currently sitting 13th in the table and are 11 points off the European places.
Amorim did, however, manage to take a point off Liverpool during his first Premier League trip to Anfield earlier this month. Goals from Lisandro Martinez and Amad denied the leaders from strengthening its position, in a season where Liverpool could draw level with United on 20 top-flight titles.
