Thomas Tuchel has just seen what Newcastle United have known all season
Thomas Tuchel had a busy Saturday, taking in two Premier League games in first his weekend as the new head coach of the England team. But as he hot-footed it away from Tottenham to head for Brighton before the final whistle of Newcastle's 2-1 win, he would have been left in no doubt that United have the best pair of young English full-backs in the Premier League.
Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall put on another excellent display in front of the former Chelsea boss to underline their credentials as the future for England. Both won their first senior caps under Lee Carsley in the November internationals, and have gone from strength to strength since in United colours.
Anthony Gordon's attacking display would surely have come as no surprise to Tuchel, but the Newcastle forward again showed just why his star is in the ascendancy for club and country in Saturday's 2-1 win. But it was United's two attacking full-backs who will have really caught his eye.

Livramento was making his first start since the win at Ipswich before Christmas, with Kieran Trippier performing well in his absence against Aston Villa and Manchester United. However, the 22-year-old slotted straight back into the side, nullifying the threat of the pacy Timo Werner and contributing to his fair share of United attacks.
Time and again he outpaced the German, with Ange Postecoglou eventually hooking him. Son Heung-min caused more problems, but it was the United fuil-back who came out on top again.
On the other flank, Hall barely gave Brennan Johnson a sniff as his continued his meteoric 2024 rise in 2025. There have been few to match Hall in recent weeks - indeed all season - for United. Still only 20, he is far from the finished article, which makes you wonder just how good he can become.
He will have ups and downs, but has added a defensive nous to his game without curbing his attacking nature. For the first half against Liverpool, he had Mo Salah firmly in his pocket. Yes, the Egyptian 'escaped' to put in a blisering second-half display, but it is all a steep learning curve for Hall.
Full-backs are potentially a problem position going forward, but Tuchel could do a lot worse than following Eddie Howe's example and trusting his young players to learn on the job. It has paid off for Newcastle, and it will for England, given the chance.
