Thomas Tuchel press conference LIVE: New England manager says ‘I’m sorry I have a German passport’
England have officially announced Thomas Tuchel as the new manager of the men’s national team, with highly-regarded English coach Anthony Barry as his assistant.
The German succeeds Gareth Southgate as the permanent boss of the side in an eye-catching appointment made by the Football Association (FA). The former Chelsea manager has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, but carries real pedigree, leading the Stamford Bridge club to Champions League triumph in 2021 and winning league titles in both Germany and France.
The 51-year-old will lead England into the 2026 World Cup on North American soil having emerged as the FA’s preferred appointment this week – with official confirmation coming on Wednesday morning. A number of candidates, including Pep Guardiola, were sounded out over the vacancy while Lee Carsley performed the duties on an interim basis, but Tuchel fits many of the criteria outlined by the stand-in manager last week.
Having worked closely with captain Harry Kane at Bayern last season, Tuchel will be unveiled as the third foreign holder of the role after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, but leading pundit Gary Lineker isn’t sure the Three Lions have made the right choice.

Who is Anthony Barry? England’s new assistant to Thomas Tuchel who coached at Chelsea and Bayern Munich
18:00 , Mike Jones
Anthony Barry had to submit a dissertation to achieve his FA Pro Licence, so the young coach studied 16,380 throw-ins and presented his findings to his classmates, who included Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick.
It was 2020, and it would prove to be a formative moment in his career. Lampard brought Barry – then assistant manager at League One’s Wigan Athletic – to work with him at Chelsea, and the Liverpudlian coach stayed on under Lampard’s successors, Thomas Tuchel and then Graham Potter.
Tuchel was so impressed that when he joined Bayern Munich he “bought” Barry from Chelsea for £1m, and put the Englishman in charge of all his set-pieces. In the meantime, Barry worked as a coach under Roberto Martinez at Belgium and then Portugal’s national team, flying between club and national roles with a laptop for each job.

Thomas Tuchel on whether or not he will sing English national anthem
17:40 , Mike Jones
New Three Lions manager Thomas Tuchel has been pressed on whether or not he will sing the English national anthem before matches.
The German native, who was today (16 October) officially unveiled as England’s new coach, gave his first press conference about his plans for the national side.
When asked if he will sing the country’s national anthem, the 51-year-old said: “I understand it is a personal decision, there are managers who sing and some who don’t. I have not made my decision yet.
“No matter what decision I take I will always show my respect to the country and a very moving anthem.”
Who would Germany’s Thomas Tuchel join on list of overseas England managers?
17:30 , Mike Jones
Fabio Capello (2007-2012)
Overall record: Played 42, won 28, drawn eight, lost six, scored 89, conceded 35, win ratio 66.7 percent.
Tournament record: Last 16 at 2010 World Cup, qualified for Euro 2012.
Strengths: Arrived with a stellar CV and coaching record, having won league titles with AC Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus. Extensive tactical knowhow produced defensively strong, disciplined teams.
Weaknesses: The English language – he once said he needed only 100 words to communicate with the players. However, that did nothing for his relationship with the media. His man-management was also found wanting as Capello also treated the players like schoolchildren, which was a huge change from his predecessor and not one well-received with the squad who described their 2010 World Cup base as a “luxury prison”.
Who would Germany’s Thomas Tuchel join on list of overseas England managers?
17:20 , Mike Jones
Sven-Goran Eriksson (2001-2006)
Record: Played 67, won 40, drawn 17, lost 10, scored 128, conceded 61, win ratio 59.7 percent
Tournament history: 2002 World Cup quarter-final, Euro 2004 quarter-final, 2006 World Cup quarter-final.
Strengths: Loved by the players, to whom he was incredibly loyal, and that helped foster a great team spirit and character. Calm under pressure, both on the field and off it with the media after a number of stories about his private life.
Weaknesses: His loyalty to chosen players in a settled squad often left him hamstrung or reluctant to bring in wildcard selections. The style of football was not very entertaining and was criticised for not getting more out of England’s ‘golden generation’.

Can Tuchel win the World Cup?
17:00 , Mike Jones
Thomas Tuchel will be the England men’s national team’s 16th different permanent manager and just the third non-Englishman after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
According to Opta, Eriksson boasted a 59.7% winning record while Italy’s Capello’s was an impressive 66.7%. Tuchel has a 57.3% win percentage across 578 games as a manager with his best being 74.8% during his time with PSG.
These stats point to something but it’s unclear whether they will transfer to Tuchel actually winning the World Cup with England.
How would England line up under Thomas Tuchel?

Thomas Tuchel is the new favourite to become the next permanent England manager.
The former Chelsea head coach is now in line to succeed Gareth Southgate after holding talks with the FA. Tuchel has moved ahead of Lee Carsley, who has been the interim boss over the last four games.
But after confusing messages from Carsley to the media last week, Tuchel has emerged as the favourite, with Pep Guardiola, whose long-term Manchester City future remains unclear, also linked with the job.

Ferdinand says Tuchel will ‘galvanise players’

Rio Ferdinand says the England players are likely to have feelings of “anxiety and apprehension kicking in” knowing that Thomas Tuchel is now the head coach.
“They want to be led to the promised land,” Ferdinand posted on X, formerly Twitter. “I know for a fact that these players will be sat there ringing each other and asking ‘what is he like?’ They will be calling all of their mates that have played under him.
“All of the players will be questioning themselves and asking whether they are what he likes. It will invigorate and galvanize some players but there will be a little of bit of anxiety and apprehension kicking in.”

Neville calls for new English identity
16:22 , Mike Jones
Gary Neville was assistant to Roy Hodgson when the FA established a new hub for English football at St George’s Park, in a bid to give the national game a sense of place and identity. Despite clear improvements in the technical quality of English players, elite managers are few and far between.
“What I have seen in this last 15, 20 years is the reputational damage that English coaching has taken,” Neville added. “We are in a rut when it comes to English coaching. English coaching is one of the least respected big nations in Europe when it comes to taking charge of a football team. Spanish, German, Italian coaches, Portuguese coaches are renowned for their styles of play, for their philosophy.
“We don’t have a clear identity as an English nation of what we are anymore. We haven’t built a style, we haven’t got a coach who’s built a style that’s unique to us and we’ve seen coaches from all around Europe come and input their styles into our game and we’re trying to copy what they do without really developing our own style.
“My view is that we need to build an identity as an English sort of country in terms of what our style of play is and let English coaches flourish, and St George’s Park was set up to do that.”
Gary Neville highlights problems with Thomas Tuchel’s England appointment
16:13 , Mike Jones
Gary Neville has warned the Football Association it has “hard questions to answer” after appointing German manager Thomas Tuchel as England’s new head coach.
Tuchel was announced on Wednesday as the new man in charge of the England national team after what the FA called a “very thorough” recruitment process. The 51-year-old will formally begin his role on 1 January, with Lee Carsley continuing in the interim.
And while Neville, who played under Eriksson in an 85-cap England career, praised the FA for hiring one of the best managers in world football, he said it signalled a “rut” in the history of English coaching.
“I think everybody in our country including myself will wish him all the best and hope we can get over the line and win a trophy,” Neville told Sky Sports. “But I think there are some serious questions for the FA to answer in respect of English coaching.
“I do think we are damaging ourselves by accepting that Thomas Tuchel is better than any of the other English coaches. With the English coaches that have managed in the upper echelons of the league with Eddie Howe at Newcastle and Graham Potter, I do think there are outstanding coaches that could have been appointed that were English.”
England boss Thomas Tuchel says German passport will not stand in way of success
16:07 , Mike Jones
New England boss Thomas Tuchel apologised for having a German passport but insisted he was ready to prove wrong the critics who are against a foreign coach taking charge.
The 51-year-old, who said he has not yet decided whether he would sing the national anthem, has signed an 18-month contract and stressed his focus was to get over the line in a major tournament after several near-misses under predecessor Gareth Southgate.
Tuchel, who has previously managed Borussia Dortmund, Paris St Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, is the third non-Englishman to hold the post after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Lineker on whether Tuchel can win the World Cup
16:00 , Mike Jones
Gary Lineker said: “It is just one last step isn’t it? They made a couple of finals under Gareth Southgate so were knocking on the door.
“There is no question that England have the quality needed to challenge for trophies and the upcoming World Cup. They have the ability throughout.
“Sometimes if you keep knocking on the door then it might just open, and I have no doubt it will with this England squad. Whether that is in 18 months’ time or over three years that remains to be seen. It is just about belief so hopefully Tuchel can instil that in them. They should have that because they are so talented.
“He will have difficulties and problems because sometimes having that much talent can be an issue for you. He is going to have to try and keep super high-quality players happy when they are not always playing as he can’t play them all.
“But he is very demanding and driven. He has very good tactical acumen. There is no question that England will be one of the favourites going into the next World Cup.”
Neville ‘disappointed’ for English coaches
15:52 , Mike Jones
Gary Neville also explained that the appointment of Thomas Tuchel speaks of a failing at St. George’s Park to properly prepare and promote English coaches at home and in Europe.
He acknowledged that Tuchel is a great coach but admitted to being disappointed that there wasn’t an equally great English coach available to replace Gareth Southgate.
Neville told Sky Sports: “There is an element of disappointment in my head thinking about the fact that the FA have gone to an international coach.
“I was a sceptic of St. George’s Park, I was with England under Roy Hodgson when England moved there. I was worried whether it would succeed or not. What you can’t deny over the last seven or eight years is the relative success of the England teams right the way through the youth teams to the women’s team to the men’s team getting to two finals which hasn’t happened for 50/60 years.
“If we’re not going to promote English coaches in out own country then we can’t ask anybody to promote English coaching either in the Premier League or leagues around Europe. It’s been a difficult time for English coaches over a 15-20 year period to try and gain some reputational success in Europe.
“I think Gareth [Southgate] restored a bit of faith, not just in English coaching but in English players. What the FA have done doesn’t feel like a strategic decision, it feels like an instinctive one. Thomas Tuchel has been available for months and there was no need to appoint an interim in Lee Carsley if they want Tuchel months ago.”
England appointing Thomas Tuchel shows as much desperation as inspiration
15:45 , Mike Jones
When Thomas Tuchel sat down with the Football Association over the last week, there was one detail that weighed over everything. That was simply to win the 2026 World Cup. That was the huge attraction of the job for him. That was the primary impetus for the FA.
It was obviously about so much more than Lee Carsley’s defeat to Greece last week, given that Tuchel had already signed his contract at that point. It was as early as 8 October. The FA certainly did will to keep the story under wraps in quite an old-fashioned way. The German’s own existing interest in the job also increased once it became clear that Manchester United were not going to move off Erik ten Hag any time soon.
A narrative could be formed about how the Old Trafford hierarchy has let another manager, who could have been the right man, go, but there is a grander storyline to this. England have certainly made a statement with this appointment, even if it says a few different things about the national game.

Winners and losers after Tuchel confirmed as England manager
15:38 , Sonia Twigg
Loser:
Conor Gallagher
Gallagher struggled for England during the Euros in the summer when asked to fill an unfamiliar role in midfield.
Thomas Tuchel was at Chelsea when Gallagher was sent out on loan to Crystal Palace, a club he starred for during the 2021-22 season.
But that history could count against the midfielder, who was sold to Atletico Madrid by Chelsea in a bid to boost their finances.

Winner:
Marcus Rashford
The Manchester United forward has not been a part of any England squad since he was left out of the provisional squad for Euro 2024 in the summer.
Rashford netted 17 goals in 60 matches for England but in recent months has struggled for form for his club, and has scored four times this season, of which two came against League One side Barnsley.
A new manager may offer Rashford a chance in the prospect of a reset, but his club form would likely have to improve before he is considered for selection.

Loser:
Harry Maguire
Maguire made more than 60 appearances for Southgate’s England, but missed the most recent Euros with a calf injury.
He was relied upon by Southgate to do a role alongside John Stones, but he will be well into his 30s by the time the 2026 World Cup comes around, and could find himself out in the cold with the new manager.

Winner:
Cole Palmer
Ahead of the most recent international matches, the Chelsea winger had only started in two of his nine international caps. But a new manager could offer him an opportunity to cement a spot in the starting XI.
Although the pair never overlapped during Tuchel’s spell in charge of Chelsea, it will be interesting to see how the German manages the young England star who has been so significant to his former side.

15:17 , Sonia Twigg
Loser:
Jordan Pickford
Pickford has been England’s undisputed number one under Southgate, and has a strong record for the national side.
However, Dean Henderson was called up for the match against Finland and Pickford has been more inconsistent for Everton than he has for England.
Should Tuchel decide to draw a clean slate under previous form, he may look at Pickford differently and the goalkeeper would have to step up.

Winner:
Ben White
White left the 2022 World Cup mid-tournament for personal reasons and has not been selected for a national team since, and has just four caps to his name.
All of those came under Gareth Southgate’s tenure, and could a new manager tempt the Arsenal right back back into the international fold? It feels unlikely but there is always a chance he could be tempted.
Lineker compares Tuchel to Southgate
15:06 , Mike Jones
On how Thomas Tuchel compares to Gareth Southgate, Gary Lineker said: “He is a different kind of manager to Southgate. He will be more of an aggressive coach in terms of playing on the front foot.
“He is tactically wise and I think he will be more offensive than Southgate. It will be interesting to see if he can make them gel and believe in themselves.”
Shearer has no problem with Tuchel’s nationality
14:59 , Mike Jones
Thomas Tuchel’s German nationality will no doubt displease a certain section of fans, but Alan Shearer says he does not have a problem with it, stating: “If he’s the outstanding candidate, yeah.
“There’s no doubt he’s got an incredible CV, what he’s won and managing at the highest level, working with superstars. But this is going to be a very, very different test for him. It’s a bold move from the FA, there’s no doubt about it.
“We need a trophy, it’s as simple as that. And we need a manager that can deliver that.”

Gary Lineker has revealed who his preferred choice for the England manager’s job is.
Thomas Tuchel is set to be appointed by the FA but, speaking on his The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker admitted he would have gone in a different direction.
“I’d have given the job to [interim boss] Lee Carsley,” he said. “I have seen enough to suggest to me the players really trust him.
“And he is imaginative enough to produce something that is a joy to watch, is entertaining and front-footed football. I’d have gone for Lee Carsley (but) it is not my job to pick people like that.”

FA interviewed 10 candidates

FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham on other candidates: “The whole process was confidential. I understand at times that may be frustrating for people but we had to make that confidential for us but also really, more importantly for the candidates.

Bullingham thanks Carsley for stepping into interim role
14:08 , Mike Jones
Right at the start of the press conference Mark Bullingham thanked Lee Carsley for filling the gap between Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel.
He siad: “We are also delighted that Ant [Anthony Barry] is joining us. He is one of the most exciting young English coaches around.
“I’d like to thank Lee Carlsey for stepping into role for six matches, he’s handled himself really well and I’m sure will continue to do so. He will manage the team for the November international window, and then return to lead the Under-21s trying to defend their Euro under-21 title.
“I’d also like to thank Gareth and Steve. The fact we had such a high level of interest in this role was testament to the foundations they laid over their eight years with us.”
Did Tuchel speak with Harry Kane before his appointment?
14:02 , Mike Jones
“I did speak to no one. We kept it very confidential.” said the new England boss when asked if he reached out to England captain Harry Kane or former boss Gareth Southgate before taking on the role.
“I did not speak to Harry or Gareth. I never do this to get my own feelings for it and my own point of view. It’s too early to answer these questions.
“You know how highly I think of Harry and how hard I fought to bring him to Bayern Munich. He is already on his way to being a legend in English football.”
How will Thomas Tuchel change the England team?
13:58 , Mike Jones
Tuchel says he will build on the vision and processes that Gareth Southgate put in place during his time at England boss and explained a few things he will try to develop.
Tuchel said: “The players have proved that they are there, the consistency is impressive, we have players who compete in the strongest league in the world every week.
“We have the ingredients and we fully trust that this is the moment to instal, from club football, patterns, behaviours and principles to push the team over the line.
“We will need luck also, but we feel confident. We speak openly about the target – the second star [on the shirt] – but I have to prove myself every day.”
New England boss signed 18-month contract
13:56 , Mike Jones
Thomas Tuchel explained why he only signed a short term deal the with national team and explained, in a joking manner, that he has experience with 18-month deals.
“Let’s see, it’s 18 months, then we agreed to sit together,” said Tuchel when explaining his contract with England. “I have good experience with 18 months [laughs]. I’m working on my long-term game also.
“In this particular case it was important for me to have a frame around it as it’s a bit of a step into the dark for me as I’m used to working every day [with players].
“The last piece of it from me to understand that this is something that can really excite me to the fullest was the timeframe of 18-months but to demand from myself to not lose the focus. It’s a good timeframe because it will help us focus. It is very streamlined.
“I can understand some people would prefer an English coach but I think we deserve a fair chance, for having a good record in the country and for how much we love living in this country.
“We’ll try to convince them through results.”
Bullingham addresses ‘uncomfortable truth'
13:56 , Mike Jones
FA CEO Mark Bullingham spoke about the ‘uncomfortable truth’ that Thomas Tuchel isn’t English.
He said: “We were also very clear that we wanted the very best person for the job and we feel like we owe it to the players and the country to give them that support and leadership in tournaments that will help them get over the line, to give us the best chance of winning a trophy in the men’s World Cup.
“We feel we’ve done that. We feel delighted that Thomas has joined us.”
Tuchel explains ‘shared vision’ with FA
13:54 , Mike Jones
Tuchel says he and the FA have a ‘shared vision’ for the national team and that he always wanted to return to coaching in England.
He said: “They made it clear it’s about football and that got me excited. I wasn’t sure this was the job for me because the schedule is very different. I always wanted to come back to England, that was my big goal.
“The offer came at the right time and we found a vision to share. Now I have to live up to it. I know there are some trophies and I want to help that happen.”

Will Tuchel sing the national anthem?
13:50 , Mike Jones
Lee Carsley was given a shock by the response to his decision not to sing the national anthem when he took up the interim manager’s role. Thomas Tuchel is asked whether he will sing it.
He replied: “I understood from Mark [Bullingham] it is a personal decision, there were some who sang and others didn’t. I have not made my decision yet.
“Your anthem is very moving. I have experienced it here at Wembley in the FA Cup final. Either way, I will show respect to a very moving anthem.I will always show my respect to the new role and the country.”
Tuchel ‘unsure’ about international football
13:47 , Mike Jones
The new England boss admitted that he was unsure about making the jump to international football and whether it would be right for him.
He agreed with the FA about many things about the role and that he always wanted to return to English football after leaving Chelsea in September 2022.
He says “there are a few trophies missing” from the FA cabinet and he will aim to change this.
Pressure of England role doesn’t phase Tuchel
13:45 , Mike Jones
Thomas Tuchel was asked if he had thought about the increased pressure and scrutiny that comes with being the England manager and he replied: “This is the last thing I think about.
“I’m up for the pressure on the sporting side and the challenge and the big task. These are the reasons to jump in. The pressure on the personal side or from the media if things don’t go well is never part of the thinking.”
Tuchel says England job is a ‘privilege'
13:42 , Mike Jones
More from the new England boss who says: “It’s a big job and it doesn’t make a lot of sense to compare. It feels like a privilege. It’s very new because I come from club football. I’m very excited by it.
“I want to get the best out of these players. It’s pretty obvious I am very emotional and I love what I am doing, I’m passionate about football. This task and this role, it brought the young me alive. I’m excited for the big task of the Three Lions and playing at Wembley.
“We will do it with passion and emotion. We have to go through the qualification process to the World Cup and it starts for us in January.”
‘I’m sorry, I just have a German passport'
13:40 , Mike Jones
When asked about his response to the fans who would prefer an English manager, Thomas Tuchel says: “I’m very excited and honoured to be here as new head coach of England. I read a quote from Pele at the entrance saying Wembley is the heart of football and I agree.
““I’m sorry, I just have a German passport. Maybe these supporters felt my passion for the Premier League and the country, how I love to live here and work here. Hopefully, I can convince them and show them how I am proud to be the England manager. I am proud.”

Thomas Tuchel had many influences and mentors through the fledgling years of his coaching career, most notably Ralf Rangnick and Jurgen Klopp. But perhaps the most intriguing was a German scientist, Professor Wolfgang Schollhorn.
Schollhorn advocated the benefits of ‘differential learning’, in which the student’s environment is constantly disturbed and disrupted, forcing them to come up with new solutions rather than simply repeating the same motions.
“If we want to have extraordinary performance, we need to train extraordinarily!” went Schollhorn’s maxim.

12:52 , Mike Jones
12:45 , Mike Jones
Thomas Tuchel will be the England men’s national team’s 16th different permanent manager and just the third non-Englishman after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
According to Opta, Eriksson boasted a 59.7% winning record while Italy’s Capello’s was an impressive 66.7%. Tuchel has a 57.3% win percentage across 578 games as a manager with his best being 74.8% during his time with PSG.
These stats point to something but it’s unclear whether they will transfer to Tuchel actually winning the World Cup with England.
English coaches in a ‘rut’ says Neville
12:38 , Mike Jones
Gary Neville spoke about English coaches struggling to reach the high-end jobs. He told Sky Sports: “What the FA have done doesn’t feel strategic, it seems quite instinctive. Tuchel has been available since the summer, so they didn’t need to appoint an interim manager. It smacks of it being quite a recent decision.
“Let’s be clear, Tuchel is better than any of the other English candidates. But the likes of Graham Potter and Eddie Howe show there were outstanding candidates that could have been appointed and that were English.
“The reputational damage English coaching has taken means we are now in a rut. We are one of the least respected nations when it comes to taking charge of a football team. We don’t have a clear identity and we haven’t got a coach that has built a style that is unique to us. We’ve just copied what others do.
“We need to build an identity and let English coaches flourish. St George’s Park was set up to do that. So I do think the FA have got some difficult questions to answer.”
Ferdinand says Tuchel will ‘galvanise players'
12:30 , Mike Jones
Nigel Farage slams FA over Tuchel appointment: ‘Why the hell can’t we have an English manager?’
12:23 , Mike Jones
Nigel Farage has attacked the FA for appointing German Thomas Tuchel to succeed Gareth Southgate, asking: “Why oh why can’t we have an English manager?”
The Reform UK boss joined critics questioning the governing body’s decision to choose Tuchel who will take over from interim boss Lee Carsley in January following Southgate’s resignation after the Three Lions’ Euros campaign in July.
The former Chelsea, Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich manager becomes the third non-Englishman to hold the post after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

Thomas Tuchel addressed his appointment as England manager with a short social media message posted to the England Twitter account.
It in he said: “I’m quite a bit nervous, this is my first message as England head coach. I’m at Wembley, where else? There’s also a reason to be a bit nervous, it’s a good thing.
“I can promise you that I’m very excited and honoured and I will do everything to qualify and have a successful World Cup.”

England appointing Thomas Tuchel shows as much desperation as inspiration
11:54 , Mike Jones
When Thomas Tuchel sat down with the Football Association over the last week, there was one detail that weighed over everything. That was simply to win the 2026 World Cup. That was the huge attraction of the job for him. That was the primary impetus for the FA.
It was obviously about so much more than Lee Carsley’s defeat to Greece last week, given that Tuchel had already signed his contract at that point. It was as early as 8 October. The FA certainly did well to keep the story under wraps in quite an old-fashioned way.

Neville ‘disappointed’ for English coaches
11:46 , Mike Jones
Gary Neville addresses Thomas Tuchel appointment
11:39 , Mike Jones
The former Manchester United and England right-back had plenty to say on the implications of the FA appointing Thomas Tuchel as the new England manager but made it clear that the appointment is a strong one.
Neville appeared on Sky Sports News and said: “They’ve got a great coach. Thomas Tuchel has a proven track record, he’s proven he can win big knockout matches so from that point of view the FA cannot be criticised. They’ve probably got the best available coach in Europe and the world at this moment in time so fitting that criteria they’re spot on.
“I’m not sure it fits the criteria of St. George’s Park and the belief in English coaches and the growth in the English teams’ performance over the last seven or eight years. Not just with the first team but with the women’s team and the youth teams as well. St. George’s Park was going to be a hotbed of proving that English coaches could get back to the top of Europe which is proving to be very difficult.”
Who is Anthony Barry?
11:32 , Lawrence Ostlere
And so, as Tuchel was announced as England’s new manager on Wednesday, it was no surprise to see Barry named as his assistant. Tuchel has alongside him a friend and trusted colleague who knows English football and the FA, who has coached captain Harry Kane before, who has worked with world-class players, international teams and already been to a World Cup.
Shearer has no problem with Tuchel’s nationality
10:24 , Mike Jones
Thomas Tuchel’s German nationality will no doubt displease a certain section of fans, but Alan Shearer says he does not have a problem with it, stating: “If he’s the outstanding candidate, yeah.
“There’s no doubt he’s got an incredible CV, what he’s won and managing at the highest level, working with superstars. But this is going to be a very, very different test for him. It’s a bold move from the FA, there’s no doubt about it.
“We need a trophy, it’s as simple as that. And we need a manager that can deliver that.”
Gary Lineker reveals his choice for England manager
08:31 , Luke Baker
Gary Lineker has revealed who his preferred choice for the England manager’s job is.
Thomas Tuchel is set to be appointed by the FA but, speaking on his The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker admitted he would have gone in a different direction.
“I’d have given the job to [interim boss] Lee Carsley,” he said. “I have seen enough to suggest to me the players really trust him.
“And he is imaginative enough to produce something that is a joy to watch, is entertaining and front-footed football. I’d have gone for Lee Carsley (but) it is not my job to pick people like that.”
