Thomas Tuchel: Style of play, teams coached and trophies won by incoming England manager
Thomas Tuchel has officially been appointed as England’s new manager.
Tuchel will follow only the late Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello as foreign coaches to take the Three Lions job and will no doubt be expected to go deep at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Southgate, for all his critics, took England to two consecutive European Championship finals, restoring England as a major international football.
Standard Sport looks at the incoming England manager…
Thomas Tuchel: Style of play
Standard Sport’s Dom Smith: “Tuchel adopted a 4-2-3-1 system as his favoured formation when he was Bayern Munich manager, and this neatly matches the way England lined up in their final few years under Gareth Southgate, as well as how they have tended to play under Lee Carsley.
“At Chelsea, he played predominantly with a back three and pushed full-backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James up high. The pair were the creative sparks in his side which won the Champions League in May 2021 shortly after he had taken over as manager.
“It will be interesting to see whether Tuchel decides to rejuvenate their England careers and select a back-three, but with the players he will have available to him a back four looks, on the face it, more likely.
“Tuchel already has experience coaching and getting the best out of England’s leading marksman and captain Harry Kane, of course. Last season — Kane’s first for Bayern — he was the leading scorer in Europe under the watch of Tuchel, who also managed to harness his creative talents by allowing him to drop deep and play long passes to wingers. Kane could be allowed the same freedom for England under Tuchel.
“It seems inevitable that Tuchel will be of the belief that England need to develop an ability to play in more than one system, and the Football Association can be pleased about having hired a manager who showed at Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern that he is adept at changing things up when one formation is not working. He won silverware at each club.”
