Threave Rovers are back in promotion contention after a win over basement boys Wishaw.

Saturday’s 3-0 win at Meadow Park moved the Castle Douglas side up to fourth in the West of Scotland League’s third division.

The top three sides go up – and Threave have three games in hand over all of the teams above them.

Boss Danny Dunglinson said: “It always looks better when you’re sitting a bit higher up.

“The top three go up and we’re well within reach of that - and if we win our games in hand we’re not far off top.

“We need to take it one game at a time. We’ve another break from the league on Saturday and leaders Thorn play second placed Greenock.

“We can sit back and watch what happens there because somebody’s got to drop points.”

Threave led early on thanks to Liam Douglas with Niall Rogerson heading in the second just after the break.

And Liam Park scored the third just before the hour mark to ensure the points stayed in Castle Douglas.

It also meant Dunglinson could make some changes – including bringing on Charlie Watson, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

He said: “He was due to go for an operation but it’s been cancelled and he’s been back training.

“It was nice to get him on as captain for the last 10 minutes.

“It was pretty straightforward – we got a goal in the first two or three minutes, which helps.

“If you’re chasing the game looking for the first goal you can start to panic but getting that goal meant we could relax.

“We created a lot of chances but didn’t take them.

“It was only 1-0 at half-time but we weren’t in any danger, it was just a matter of being patient.

“The first two goals came from corners which was pleasing as I don’t think we’d scored from a corner before Saturday. It just shows how important they can be.”

Threave are at home again this weekend as they face first division Kilbirnie Ladeside in the West of Scotland Cup.

A place in the quarter-finals awaits the winners of the much postponed tie.

Dunglinson added: “They’ve been in the same boat as us, their game was off on Saturday. They’ve had a lot of games off so we might be getting them at a good time.

“It’s a bonus for us, we want to win the game but it’s not the priority.

“If we get through we play Thorniewood at home who are in the same division as Kilbirnie.

“It would be a good test and both games would be at home. If you win them you’re in the semi-final of the West Cup, which would be a good achievement for a third division side.

“We’ll take it as it comes and deal with Saturday first.”
