WOOLSTON Rovers have confirmed the names of three former players who will be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame when the annual season launch dinner takes place.

Alan Johnson, Steve Martin and Ian Williams will be awarded the honour at the event taking place at Warrington Masonic Hall, Winmarleigh Street, on Saturday, February 1 at 7pm.

Former inductees conducted the voting process for admission to the celebrated group.

All three have played a significant role, both on and off the pitch, to the club’s cause.

Johnson was a stalwart of the side in the 1960s and 1970s as a strong-running and hard-tackling second-row forward before helping the club tremendously off the field for many years once he finished his playing career.

Martin was a dynamic goalkicker and excellent scrum-half or winger in the 1990s and early 2000s who was a member of the formidable side that claimed three successive National Conference League titles and three Lancashire Cup crowns, as well as scoring Rovers’ try and conversion against Warrington Wolves in the 2001 Challenge Cup tie at Wilderspool.

Williams, affectionately known as ‘Wormy’ throughout his loyal service to the Rovers club, was a tough-as-teak forward who never took a backward step during the 1970s and 1980s, and was a member of the Rovers side that was one of the inaugural 10 teams that formed the National League in 1985.

Also on the evening the current coaching staff will be outlining their hopes and aspirations for the forthcoming season, which will include the return of a Woolston under 18s side.

There will also be heritage numbers handed out by Mark Brookhouse to numerous players who have represented the Green and Gold with distinction over the years.

Tickets are now on sale, priced £25. If you would like to reserve a place, contact Dave Whalley by call or text message on 07809 647014.
