BOTTOM club Carlisle were booed off after suffering a League Two defeat at Tranmere, who were one of three League Two strugglers to close the gap on Newport County AFC.

The Exiles host Morecambe, who are one from bottom, in a vital fixture at Rodney Parade on Sunday.

Seven fixtures were played on Saturday and former Exiles favourite Cameron Norman scored the only goal of a key game at Prenton Park.

Chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning,” rang out at boss Mike Williamson from a large section of the 1,300 supporters who made the journey from Cumbria as United fell six points adrift of safety.

The home side took the lead in the 23rd minute when Norman latched on to a Kieron Morris cross to slide the ball home from six yards for his first goal for the club.

Williamson, who left Milton Keynes Dons to replace Paul Simpson in September, said: “I can completely understand the frustration of the fans as that wasn’t acceptable.

“I can only apologise as that was nowhere near good enough and it’s so disappointing to go from the last couple of performances where we were on the front foot to that.

“I feel the emotional weight we are under is just too much for some of the lads and that’s an honest assessment.

“As soon as their goal went in it took the energy out of us and you can just see the lads playing with a lot of weight on their shoulders.”

Jack Muldoon scored one and set up another as Harrogate boosted their survival hopes with a 2-0 win at Barrow.

The Sulphurites, who gave a start to Bryn Morris after his move from County, had lost six of their previous seven games and collected only one point from a possible 21 to slip towards the relegation zone.

But they were worthy winners in Cumbria, shading the first half and then striking twice in six second half-minutes to move five points clear of the bottom two.

Muldoon, who headed over during Town’s early dominance, glanced in a 56th-minute opener for his first league goal of the campaign.

He then produced a superb pass to free Josh March who outsmarted substitute Neo Eccleston before firing home with a low left-foot shot from 20 yards.

Shaun Whalley scored twice as Accrington made it back-to-back wins with an impressive 2-0 victory at fellow strugglers Colchester.

Whalley netted in either half as Stanley’s sixth league victory of the season moved them within two points of United – who have now won just three of their last 17 matches – and five clear of the relegation zone.

Notts County head coach Stuart Maynard described David McGoldrick as “not human for the age he is” as the striker scored both goals in a 2-0 win against Swindon, who have closed in on the Exiles in recent weeks.

The Irishman headed in the opener after 17 minutes and doubled their advantage before the break when he slammed home a through ball from George Abbott.

McGoldrick has now scored four times against Swindon this season, and Maynard said: “I was really praying for Didzy (McGoldrick) at the end to get his hat-trick with the overhead-kick, but he had to come off in the end because he has given absolutely everything.

“It’s like he is not human for the age that he is and that is exactly why he has had the career he has had, he has been incredible.”

Port Vale ended their eight-match winless run with a 2-1 triumph over promotion rivals Doncaster at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Goals from Ryan Croasdale and Lorent Tolaj saw Darren Moore’s side secure the win, although Jamie Sterry’s deflected effort gave the hosts a late lifeline.

Bradford claimed their third victory in four games with a 3-1 win over fellow play-off chasers Grimsby.

Lewis Richards and Richie Smallwood put Bradford two goals up, with Alex Pattison notching a third after Cameron McJannet pulled one back.

Salford’s sensational run continued as Hakeeb Adelakun’s first-half goal saw off MK Dons 1-0.

Former Dons boss Karl Robinson saw his Ammies side extend their winning run to six matches – all of which have come without conceding a goal – as they moved up to second ahead of the Sunday action.
