Tiatia calls Dragons players 'selfish'

Dragons head coach Filo Tiatia has voiced his dissatisfaction with the team's lack of unity, labelling parts of their Challenge Cup loss to Montpellier as 'selfish'. The Welsh outfit endured a narrow 18-14 defeat at Rodney Parade, and Tiatia was forthright in his critique following the match.

He remarked on the sombre mood after squandering chances as Dragons clawed back from an 18-0 deficit to a marginal four-point lag at the break, yet failed to advance in the second half, earning just one point in their first Pool 2 clash.

"The mood is quite sombre and the realisation of opportunities missed again," Tiatia conveyed. "We weren’t clinical enough, and there were some moments where we did not play as a team. We were actually selfish in some of the actions and we just have to learn faster.

"We’ve just got to review it and be honest with each other, focus on some of the things that we need to be better at."

Despite the loss, he praised the younger players’ learning curve and underscored the importance of their development within the squad.

"We want to expose some of our youth," he emphasised. "Some of them are not quite ready yet, but at some point they have got to be exposed, otherwise they won’t get a chance.

"All the Welsh teams have got small squads and we’ve got to try and rotate players around so we can be better. They always want to be better."

Sherratt: Teen debutant has 'really impressed me'

Cardiff Rugby boss Matt Sherratt was left disappointed with defeat by Lyon yesterday, but 18-year-old debutant Steffan Emanuel emerged as a real positive.

The young Welsh centre made his debut out in France and despite ending up on the losing side in a high-scoring encounter, his first taste of pro rugby will stand him in good stead.

Speaking about the game, Sherratt said: “It’s quite a difficult one to summarise really. I think the basics of the game is, the penalty count is 14-4 against us and we creaked at a set piece a little bit. They’re two things when you come away from home that you’re looking for at least parity to keep you in the game.

“But to score four tries and get a point is a positive. For Jacob Beetham to come back and play and for Steff Emanuel as an 18-year-old to get his first taste of rugby is a positive. That gives us a little bit more in terms of options and selection but if I’m honest a little bit disappointed with penalty count and elements of the game.

“It’s probably a little bit of a broken record but I just didn’t feel that we put enough of our game on the field. When we did, as I said, we score four tries, which was excellent away at a place like this but just not enough of those moments really.”

Of the centre partnership, which included Emanuel and veteran Rey Lee-Lo, Sherratt added: “It’s an 18-year-old and a 39-year-old I think. I was just speaking to Steff’s dad there. Just to see how proud his family is and watching Steff all week and watching him walk into the stadium and playing alongside players that he’s been watching through his youth has been a pleasure to watch.

"As I said to his dad to have Sheedy inside him, Rey Lee-Lo outside him and Josh Adams behind him at the end of the game. It doesn’t come much better than that, but I’ve been really impressed with him all through the week in terms of his mentality towards the game. He’s genuinely looked forward to it, so let’s hope he’s one of many for a good young Cardiff player.”

Jiffy sums talent up

Meanwhile, Wales legend Jonathan Davies has summed Emanuel up, describing him as a "talented and a lovely kid".

Jiffy shared his sentiments accompanying an interview of Emanuel post-match on Saturday evening, in which the teenager expressed his delight at making his debut for the Blue and Blacks.

"It was an unbelievable experience," he said. "Really grateful for the opportunity Jock's given me this week. And to play in such an incredible stadium as well, I'm really thankful for."

He added of centre partner Lee-Lo: "He's not too bad, is he? He's a hell of a player. But to be fair, he's really helped me especially, not just today but in the last few months since I joined. He's been really encouraging. Like the way he speaks to me, and not just me, the younger boys as well. I can't thank him enough as well for how he's been with me."

Emanuel's family managed to make the trip to France to make his debut even more special.
