Tommy Conway's goalscoring vow as he makes Middlesbrough return after Latte Lath exit
Tommy Conway has vowed to give his all to help Middlesbrough achieve success this season as he made his long-awaited return from injury just after Emmanuel Latte Lath’s exit.
Conway enjoyed friendly competition with Latte Lath throughout the first half of the season and was on eight goals, with a better goals-per-minute ratio than the Ivorian when he suffered a hamstring injury on Boxing Day. In his absence, Latte Lath moved himself clear at the top of the scoring charts with 11 before departing in a club-record sale to MLS outfit Atlanta United.
In that regard, Conway’s return from injury against Sunderland was a timely one, as he came off the bench. After another week of training, he’ll be hoping to make his first start when Boro travel to Sheffield United on Wednesday evening. He now faces fresh competition in the form of Kelechi Iheanacho, who joined on loan from Sevilla on transfer deadline day and will hope to make his Boro debut against the Blades.

On how he hopes to contribute to a big end to the season for Boro though, Conway said: “I’m just doing as much as I can when I can. I’m working hard and whatever happens for me happens. When I play, I give 110% and try and score or contribute in any way that I can. Whether that’s in my general performance or with a goal, whatever it is to just try and help the team as much as I can.
“Hopefully I can go on to score many more, and we can go on to achieve success this season. I don't think about about how many we’ve scored because it’s all about the team really and not competition between us. Whoever scores the goals, hopefully I can just continue to play my part in helping the team.”
With Iheanacho a new face at Boro, Conway will hope to use the fact he’s already embedded on Teesside to his advantage. Though only at the club since the summer after a big move from Bristol City, he found settling in on Teesside really easy - which could be a good omen for the six new arrivals last month who are also needing to quickly bed in now as Boro look to turn their poor form around.
The striker said: “I love coming in every day working with the gaffer and learning new things and the dressing room is great as well. We always have a good laugh, which always helps to settle in.
“Hayden [Hackney - Scotland U21 team-mate] helped as well. I was on the phone to Hayden for a couple of weeks before I came to get a gauge of the club and the area, and he sold it to me. Then Doaky came in later in the window as well, so it was great to have familiar faces. But I also love meeting new people and making new bonds. I’ve really enjoyed it here so far.”
