Tomoki Iwata’s injury ‘isn’t as bad as first feared’ but the Birmingham City midfielder could miss this weekend’s match with Rotherham United.

Japanese midfielder Iwata was on the receiving end of a crunching challenge from Huddersfield Town captain Jonathan Hogg late in Tuesday’s victory at the John Smith’s Stadium. Iwata hobbled off the field with the help of two physios and left the stadium with his foot in a protective boot.

“It’s not as bad as we first feared, judging by the results of the tests, but it’s still a knock so we’ll have to see how he goes in the next day or so,” Blues manager Chris Davies said at his pre-Rotherham press conference.

Iwata, 27, only returned from an injury against Huddersfield after three games on the sidelines. Fellow midfielders Paik Seung-ho and Willum Willumsson are still out, while wideman Emil Hansson is also still in the treatment room.

If Iwata isn’t fit to face resurgent Rotherham, who have won three of their last four league games, then Marc Leonard will likely be partnered in midfield by Taylor Gardner-Hickman. Krystian Bielik is another option, although Davies views his captain as a defender first nowadays.
