Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, January 8.

Posh chief drops hint about target

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has hinted that Hector Kyprianou is likely to leave in the summer - rather than this month.

The Posh midfielder is someone Cardiff have looked at, with the Cyprus international having worked under manager Omer Riza while coming through at Leyton Orient. However, WalesOnline was told the 23-year-old is likely to run his contract down at London Road and leave on a free at the end of the season.

Posh have signed defender Carl Johnston from Fleetwood Town and striker Gustav Lindgren, who might go some way to replacing Ricky-Jade Jones this month (more on that later), from Degerfors IF.

But when it comes to replacing Kyprianou, MacAnthony believes that's a job for the summer.

"So far this month we've got CJ in from Fleetwood, a great signing, we've got Gustav in from Sweden, a great signing. Another two signings like that and that will be ready good," MacAnthony told the club's website.

"Then, in the summer, [we get] potentially a Hector replacement, a Kwame (Poku) replacement and maybe one other. That's it. You're not getting four, five, six players and everyone is settled."

Middlesbrough interested in Jones

Middlesbrough are set to rival Cardiff to the signature of Posh forward Ricky-Jade Jones.

Yesterday Omer Riza confirmed that talks had been held over the potential signing of the forward, who is thought to be one of the fastest players in the world. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

However, the Daily Express now claim Middlesbrough are also interested in signing the 22-year-old. Michael Carrick's side could lose both Ben Doak and Emmanuel Latte Lath this month, with Premier League interest in both of their forward players.

TeessideLive claim there is no appetite to sign the Peterborough forward right now, but that situation could change rapidly if they lose either of their star forwards.

The Posh man has bagged 11 goals in all competitions this season, including four in two FA Cup games.

League Two clubs want Reindorf

Riza has also suggested Michael Reindorf could head out on loan this month, with League Two clubs understood to be interested in sealing a deal.

The forward has been prolific for Cardiff's under-21s team this season following his arrival from Norwich last summer. He was just breaking into the first team when he injured his ankle in training - which might just have pushed him down the pecking order again.

And Riza revealed there is interest in taking the 19-year-old striker on loan this month after he has fully recovered from his ankle issue.

“He damaged his ankle and he’s rehabbing now. Maybe another week or two potentially. There’s potential for him to go out on loan if he’s fit enough," Riza said.

“He’s got interest in League Two, potentially League One, League Two probably. Good interest.”

Etete likely to get first outing

Kion Etete is likely to get his first outing of the season tomorrow night when Cardiff take on Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

Etete suffered a hamstring injury during the final game of the club's pre-season tour of Austria back in the summer and has played only under-21s games since then. However, the striker is now fit and available and could make his season bow in the FA Cup tie at Bramall Lane.

With Cardiff and the Blades each facing their own battles at opposite ends of the Championship table, it's anticipated that both sides will ring in the changes for their upcoming FA Cup clash, with Wales and ex-Cardiff striker Kieffer Moore a doubt for the hosts after suffering an illness.

"The history of the FA Cup is massive and I don't think that will ever change," said Riza. "But with so many more games involved now, teams have to take a different stance on it, especially those teams struggling to survive and looking to put their best team out in the league."

"We will approach the game hoping to put on a good show and trying to win."

It's become commonplace for top-flight and second-tier clubs to field weaker line-ups in the FA Cup, with fixture congestion cited as a key reason, alongside the allure of other competitions which are often seen as carrying more prestige.

Riza, who has personal ties to the FA Cup from his days as a youth player at Arsenal during their 1998 triumph, and from his time playing and coaching in non-league, still believes the competition holds an important place in the calendar.

"The FA Cup is important, although I think it has become less important because of a number of factors," he said. "I don't know if you stipulate that teams have to put out their strongest teams. It is difficult because there are so many games. You have to look at it that players get given an opportunity. It gives our youngsters, those who are ready, a chance to play.

"We've just about got enough to put out another competitive side who hopefully will go into the Sheffield United game to win it.

"But we do have to consider we have another game very quickly on Tuesday [at home to Watford in the Championship] and the players will need to be ready for that."

Under-21s defeated

Cardiff's under-21s suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat at the hands of Ipswich Town yesterday.

The young Bluebirds were forced to send an incredibly inexperienced side to East Anglia to take on the Premier League club, with a number of regulars including Reindorf, Dylan Lawlor, Luey Giles, Cody Twose and Troy Perrett missing. It is likely they will be in the squad to take on Sheffield United in tomorrow's FA Cup tie.

Mannie Barton was the player to get on the scoresheet for Matt Bloxham's team and the young forward is quietly enjoying a decent season of his own.

The result sees City drop to third in the Professional Development League 2 table, however they have played fewer games than Charlton and Brentford ahead of them.
