Chambers: I love playing midfield - it's my favourite position

Calum Chambers has proved a revelation in midfield over the last four games and has revealed it is his favourite position to play.

The 29-year-old won Fulham's player of the season in 2019 while playing in that defensive midfield role and said he was disappointed when he went back to his parent club, Arsenal, and they didn't continue his development in that position.

Instead, Chambers was deployed at the back and has played the vast majority of his career in the back line. However, since moving up from centre-back at Cardiff he has been one of the standout players and was head and shoulders the best player against Watford last time out.

"I have been loving playing in midfield. It's always a position I've felt I could play throughout my career," he said ahead of the South Wales derby.

"I first had an opportunity to do that at Fulham. I had a good run at it and I absolutely loved it. I think the position that suits me and what I can bring to the game. The action always tends to be in the middle of the pitch against Swansea."

Speaking about why that midfield experiment didn't continue at Arsenal, he added: "I went back to Arsenal after that season, and it was a bit disappointing I didn't get the chance to stay in midfield. It was strange because it was something I wanted to do.

"I went back in a really good way but it just didn't happen for me. That was frustrating. It was stuff I had to deal with, but it's nice to get another chance at it now.

"Midfield is my preference as a player and where I'd like to play." Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

Tom Davies seals exit to Newport

Defender Tom Davies has sealed a permanent exit away from Cardiff and has signed for Newport County, citing his desire to play more regular first-team football.

After being given his Cardiff debut in the Carabao Cup by Mick McCarthy at the age of just 17, it was hoped that the left-back would kick on and challenge the likes of Joel Bagan for that left-back berth.

But he has largely been reduced to under-21s football, making just one more senior appearance in the FA Cup win over Sheffield United last week. He spent last season on loan at Kilmarnock but was largely just a squad option, making just six appearances.

Now, the 21-year-old Wales youth international wants to go out and make a career for himself in the senior game.

“I’m delighted to get the deal done. It’s been a long time coming, and I think this is the right move for me at this stage of my career," he said.

“I’m 21 now, so I’ve had a few loans and played a bit of first-team football, but I’m ready to push on and play as many games as I can. I feel this is the right place to do that.

“It’s a club that suits my style of play - looking to play out from the back and play attractive football. That was really appealing to me because I can use my technical ability to contribute to that. I’m just really looking forward to getting started.”

Kipre: Cardiff loan move was wake-up call

Former fan favourite Cedric Kipre has opened up on his loan move to Cardiff City and how it served as a wake-up call to him and his football career.

The centre-back was a colossus for Cardiff after joining on loan from West Brom two seasons ago and scored that decisive goal away at Rotherham which practically secured the Bluebirds' status as a Championship team.

He was pipped to the player of the year gong by Perry Ng, but his status remains high among Bluebirds supporters. And he has now revealed the factor which fuelled his performances in a City shirt.

“When I signed for West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League, I didn’t play a second the first season,” he told Liberation.

“I go on loan to Charleroi in Belgium, then I come back to West Brom where I don’t play much and I go on loan to Cardiff for the 2022-2023 season… Now, I hated it.

“Cardiff are playing in the same league as West Bromwich. I tell myself that I no longer have a choice. The West Brom directors are going to have me under their noses all season. I have to tear everything up, and that this season that is starting is mine.

“Maybe I liked this pressure. Maybe I needed it too. I don’t know. But everything has changed. I returned to West Brom in the summer of 2023 when I had one year left on my contract there and I followed that up with a great season.

“I was voted best player by the club, by a supporters’ association, then another. If I was ever proud of something, it was having turned things around.”
