Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, December 18.

Vincent Tan makes swift appointment

Vincent Tan has been markedly more decisive in his decision to appoint a new KV Kortrijk manager following the months of indecision over the same role at Cardiff City.

Bluebirds supporters had to wait 75 days for Tan to ultimately give the job to Omer Riza until the end of the season following months of speculation and growing acrimony among City fans.

However, less than 24 hours after announcing that Kortrijk manager Freyr Alexandersson had been sacked, the club have announced that former KVK manager Yves Vanderhaeghe.

The former Belgium international has managed Kortrijk twice before and spent more than 250 matches on the touchline as an assistant between 2008 and 2014. He last managed the club in 2021.

"Yves knows the house and will be in the red-white dugout for the 380th time on Saturday. Together with him, we want to start the road to the top again," CEO Sports Pieter Eecloo said.

What will be of interest to Cardiff fans, of course, will be his views on striker Roko Simic, who is out in Kortrijk on loan.

Cardiff vindicated after controversial call

Former Premier League referee Chris Foy has said Cardiff City's opening goal against Stoke City was onside.

Anwar El Ghazi tapped home from Joe Ralls' cross, with Potters fans up in arms at the time, adamant that the Netherlands international had strayed offside before netting the equaliser. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

Of course it added to the home fans' sense of persecution when an own goal from Ben Gibson appeared to have won it for the Bluebirds, before the Stoke captain atoned for the mistake by netting the equaliser in stoppage time.

Foy said on Sky Sports: "As the shot comes in from Cardiff City's No 8, it looks 'for the world' as if the player that taps the ball in at the back post is standing in an offside position.

"Thanks to the benefit of replays, we can see that Stoke City's No 16 is actually playing him onside.

"This would have been challenging to identify in real time, taking into consideration the crowded box and the fact that the assistant referee is having to stay level with the second last defender. It is testament to his awareness and excellent judgment that the goalscorer is recognised as being onside and the assistant correctly keeps his flag down."

Ex-international Johnson: Cardiff's future is bright

Former defender Reda Johnson believes Cardiff have a bright future looming after time working within the Bluebirds' academy.

The former Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday and Coventry City player has been working with City's young guns as part of the PFA and Premier League’s Professional Player to Coach Scheme.

While on the scheme, from which he recently graduated, the 36-year-old ex-Benin international has helped a number of Cardiff's youth teams, including helping them win the under-15s Floodlit Cup last season. And having seen the players close up, he thinks Cardiff fans have a lot to look forward to.

"I was very lucky to be part of the programme, because they taught me everything that I didn’t know," Johnson said. "When you finish playing football, you think that you know a lot about the game, but your ability to coach it, it’s a different world. It’s helped me to become the person that I am now and this is just the start.

“The Premier League, with the course, gave us a chance as retired footballers to become coaches that are employable. In two years, I learned so much and I don’t think I would be in the position I am in now without the scheme. I am really enjoying being at Cardiff City. The future of the academy is bright and we can see the next generation.

"We can see a lot of desire and energy in our players and for us as a club, it’s important for our players to be humble and a hard worker. Our academy players are full of that, so hopefully, we can see some excitement in the future.”
