Torquay United worked really hard to win three points today in a National League South game was exhausting to watch, let alone play in.

Two late goals from Sam Dreyer and Omar Mussa won it, but it was the effort of everyone in the team that the victory was built upon.

At times, it looked like it would end 0-0, or 1-0 to either side, but when Dreyer got the final touch on a ball bouncing around the box in the 86th minute, all but 61 of the magnificent crowd of 4,334 went wild. Mussa's calmly-taken goal in the 96th minute was the added extra. The points put Torquay on 55 points and fifth in a bunch of teams from third to sixth.

There were two changes from the 1-0 defeat at Maidstone United with central defender Ed Palmer coming in and left-footed wing back Matt Carson also making a return. With Jordan Dyer, Jay Foulston and Will Jenkins Davies all out injured, and loan striker Manny Ilesanmi having returned to Derby County because of a hamstring strain, the good news today was attacking midfielder Jordan Young was passed fit to play. Teenage winger Jacob Wellington, who has been playing for Willand Rovers in the Southern League, was on the bench.

Torquay started brightly. They were moving the ball around fast and well. In the eighth minute Young was tripped on the edge of the D by Jason Adigun and he struck the free kick just wide of the right-hand post. Adigun shot over in the 16th minute when the ball was played to the edge of the box from a corner.

It was an even game for the first half an hour. Eastbourne won a free kick on the left in the 28th minute and Dreyer headed Adigun's cross away, before Freddie Carter headed the ball wide from a second cross. Lirak Hasani and Palmer picked up yellow cards for fouls in quick succession.

In the 40th minute, Carson found Palmer with a ball into the box and from Palmer's knock-down, Cody Cooke swung his boot and the ball was stopped by goalkeeper Joe Wright. Thomas had a shot blocked as Torquay began to get on top. After some good movement, the ball fell to Young whose ferocious low shot was stopped by Wright. It was a great save and the last real chance of the half.

It felt like this one could go either way at half time. A Carson shot was deflected into the goalkeeper's arms in the 51st minute as the game started to get a bit feisty. A Jack Clarke shot was blocked at the other end. Cooke got on the end of a James Hamon free kick but Young's difficult shot went well wide.

Then came a period of pressure by Eastbourne from a series of corners and a couple of free kicks - some of the referee's decisions maddening the home crowd. Then it was Torquay's turn to attack and look dangerous - but also frustrating. Hamon then made a fantastic one-handed save from a close range shot by Courtney Clarke.

Mussa came on for Young in the 69th minute. Carson looked to have been fouled in the box but didn't go down and the referee ignored Torquay's appeals. A Jay shot was blocked next. Dan Hayfield lingered over a shot on the edge of the area, taking a first touch, so that shot was blocked too.

The game continued to swing, one way and then the other. The referee continued to make questionable decisions and he booked Wotton in the 83rd minute.

It was an agonising watch at times. When the goal came in the 86st minute it was like the pressure valve was blown - the reaction of the fans was so loud. From Mussa's corner the ball pinged around the box and Dreyer to the important touch was by Dreyer, with Eastbourne players failing to stop the ball hitting the inside of the net.

Oscar Threlkeld came on for Hayfield in the 88th minute and the Gulls were put under more pressure - this time to defend the points. Six minutes were added on and they felt like 12.

Cooke hit the post in the 83rd minute after some great work by Jay. Clarke shot wide for Eastbourne. But it was Mussa who had the final say when Cooke played the ball forward into space and the substitute ran on and calmly placed the ball past the goalkeeper.
