Torquay United went top of the National League South table after a blistering start to their home game against Farnborough this afternoon saw them go 2-0 ahead within seven minutes - and stay there.

A third minute goal by Will Jenkins Davies and a chest-in by Jordan Young set the game up but Farnborough tried hard to get something out of the game throughout - with Torquay goalkeeper James Hamon keeping his sheet clean with a fine save in injury time.

With Truro City losing and Weston-super-Mare drawing elsewhere, the 2-0 win was enough to move Torquay from third to top - a point clear of Boreham Wood, who are now in second.

Paul Wotton made two changes from the team that started the FA Trophy win against Horsham, with central defender Sam Dreyer coming back in for Ed Palmer and Cody Cooke for Brad Ash. Lirak Hasani was serving the second game of his three-match ban, while on the bench was Jack Wood, the midfielder who joined the club on loan from Southend United on Friday.
Oscar Threlkeld was caught with a high boot in midfield in the first few minutes, but the referee didn't see the foul.

It was 1-0 in the fourth minute when Torquay won the ball from a goal kick and Mussa played a lovely through ball for Jenkins Davies to run on to. Under pressure from two chasing players, Jenkin Davies approached the goalkeeper and shot past Jack Turner with a quality strike.

It was 2-0 in the seventh minute when Cooke sent in a defence splitting cross from the right and Young got to the ball just before the keeper and chested it past him from a few yards out. The game was halted in the 10th minute when Farnborough's Hady Ghandour fell awkwardly and hurt his shoulder. He left the pitch in some pain.

Torquay were all over Farnborough: Jay Foulston shot over from the edge of the box, Mussa won the ball well on the right but was tackled just as he was running at the goal. It wasn't until the 26th minute that Farnborough had a shot at goal, Joe Haigh going on a good run but firing over from 18 yards. The visitors were beginning to look a little more composed. Dyer had to block a shot after a great run and good cross from the byline by their tricky winger Richard Chin.

Young shot over from a free kick in the 36th minute after getting up from a foul 22 yards out. Ricky Holmes lobbed the ball over at the other end. In the 45th minute, Young was free and one-on-one with the goalkeeper after Mussa beat Ollie Robinosn to the ball with a header - but the player went down holding his head and the referee stopped play. Mr Searle then restarted the game by giving the ball to the Farnborough goalkeeper, much to the chagrin of Torquay's players and fans. It was a ludicrous decision.

A weak free kick by Holmes from a great position on the left side of the 18 yard box - which was easy for Hamon to hold - was the last chance of the half.

After the restart, Holmes shot wide from another good position, and in the 55th minute Cooke - who worked hard up front all game - was tracked and lost possession when running at goal. Mussa missed the target with a great chance in the 58th minute.

It really felt like Torquay needed that third goal to take the stuffing out of Farnborough. Newcomer Wood came on for Mussa in the 62nd minute. Four minutes later he cut in from the right and his deflected shot fell just wide of the post. Matt Carson came on for Young in the 69th minute. A Chin shot at the other end was deflected wide. Holmes shot over in the 81st minute.

Farnborough were seeing more and more of the ball and were beginning to create chances. Another Holmes shot was blocked by one of his own players. Farnborough heaped a lot of pressure on Torquay in the final minutes but couldn't break through. They won a series of corners and a Chin shot was well held by Hamon.

Five minutes were added on - and Chin shot over with a difficult volley. They kept knocking on the door, though, a Robinson header was superbly tipped over by Hamon, and Holmes fired over with their least chance.

That's now nine games unbeaten for the Gulls, with a home game against Hemel Hempstead Town to come next Saturday.
