Torquay United 'basic errors' costs Gulls victory
Torquay United manager Paul Wotton said his team made ‘two basic errors that cost us two points’ after the 2-2 draw at Weymouth on Boxing Day.
The Gulls were in front twice in Dorset, where almost 1,000 traveling fans got behind their team, with Will Jenkins Davies right at the end of the first-half hitting home an excellent pass by Oscar Threlkeld, and Cody Cooke scoring with a brilliant cross in the 58th minute, but letting Bradon Goodship score two levellers - the second of which came in the 79th minute. After that, the Gulls worked hard but couldn’t find a third.
The draw, ahead of the New Year’s Day home game against Wotton’s former club Truro City, meant Torquay are still top of the National League South table, but only by one point from second-placed Boreham Wood.

The manager said: “The two times we didn’t defend well, Weymouth scored two goals. I am really disappointed in the two goals we conceded, they were poor from our point of view. In the last 15-20 minutes, I thought we stopped doing the basics well. We did them OK rather than well. We started giving away silly fouls and Weymouth’s threat was obviously playing forward very quickly and we were having to defend set-pieces - which we defended very well, by the way.
“When you have been leading twice in a game, it feels like two points lost. The huge positives are that we kept the unbeaten run going, I thought there were some tremendous performances, we moved the ball really, really well - and I felt at 2-1 it was definitely there for us to go and get a third goal. But we have made two mistakes for two goals and Weymouth aren’t going to quit.
“They are bottom of the league and they are going to fight and fight and fight. I just thought we lacked enough quality to go and get the third one and finish the game off.”
There were 2,212 fans in the Bob Lucas Stadium for the game, with some 1,000 of them from Torquay. That is a huge testament to Gulls following this season, after several years of bad vibes. For the Truro game, expect Plainmoor to be full, with home tickets already sold out.
Wotton said: “Away from home on Boxing Day I thought the fans were amazing. I don’t want to say we come up short, I don’t want to day that. We had enough attacking players on the pitch and we kept going until the end. But we needed the third goal and I felt we had ample opportunity to do that.”
It shouldn’t be forgotten that Torquay are a new team with new owners and a new manager. Wotton said: “We can’t get away from the fact that we are still a work in progress. Some of the players we had today were great, we moved the ball quickly and I thought we were excellent at times.
“We are learning. I think it is really good that we are disappointed. The changing room was really quiet, I think that’s good - we are not settling for a point. I think they know it’s two points dropped. I’m disappointed, we are all disappointed, but we haven’t lost the game and I think it shows how far we have come to be sitting here now and be disappointed with that. Ultimately we have made two basic errors and it has cost us two points.”
