Tottenham confidence could come back to bite them after bold Mohamed Salah Liverpool claim
Mohamed Salah will look to continue his incredible campaign to date and help fire Liverpool into the League Cup final on Thursday night. The Egyptian has scored 25 goals and recorded 17 assists from just 33 appearances so far this season.
The Premier League’s leading goalscorer and playmaker, the 32-year-old’s electrifying form ensures he is the current favourite to win this season’s Ballon d’Or as the Reds go in pursuit of multiple honours.
Salah’s match-winning brace against Bournemouth on Saturday maintained Liverpool’s six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, while he netted his 50th European goal for the Reds in his last Champions League appearance as a 2-1 victory booked Arne Slot’s side’s place in the round-of-16.

Boasting 40 goals contributions this season, he has only failed to produce a goal or assist in eight of his appearances during the current campaign. And arguably the most disappointing of those came when Liverpool lost 1-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup semi-final first leg at the start of last month.
Coming only 17 days after Slot’s side had thrashed Spurs 6-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium - in which Salah recorded two goals and two assists - the Egyptian failed to even register a shot on target in the Reds’ return to North London.
Having won every major honour in his Liverpool career to date, Salah arguably has greater motivation going into Thursday night’s second leg. He missed last year’s League Cup final victory over Chelsea through injury, while the out-of-contract star has admitted more than once that as things stand, he expects this to be his last season at Anfield despite his desire to stay put.
If it is to be his last season with the Reds, the 32-year-old will inevitably love to add to a trophy haul which has seen him win every major honour since joining Liverpool in the summer of 2017. And while the Premier League and Champions League will be his two chief priorities, the League Cup final on March 16 offers up an early chance for first silverware of the season.
Of course, Salah will have to help the Reds overcome a 1-0 deficit first after their controversial defeat in North London last month. And to do so, he’ll have to get the better of his expected counterpart at Anfield, Djed Spence.
The 24-year-old has made 15 appearances for Spurs this season, forcing his way back into the first team after loan moves to Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa.
Starting nine times, he completed the 90 minutes at left-back in Liverpool’s previous two meetings with Tottenham. And while the Egyptian ran riot in the nine-goal Premier League encounter, it was a different story in last month’s semi-final first leg.
Spence was named man of the match on Sunday as he kept Bryan Mbuemo quiet in Tottenham’s 2-0 win away at Brentford as they ended a seven-game winless run in the Premier League.
And speaking after beating the Bees, Spence detailed how he intends to keep Salah quiet at Anfield.
“I back myself against any winger, whoever,” he said. “He's a great player, a top player. He's in good form but you’ve just got to nullify what he's good at really.
“He's good at a lot of things, I just gotta stay focused on it and hopefully come out on top.
"I just believe in my abilities and I'm a confident player, so if I’m playing off the left or right I just try to do my best.
"I think I'm a very calm person off the pitch as well, on the pitch, I'm very calm and I'm composed. I take confidence from every game, every game I'm gonna feel more confident and hopefully get better.
“It's been difficult but we fight for the manager, we fight for the club and you know, we all believe in what he wants to do. We just got to keep the fight, we got to keep the momentum.
“We’ve got to be confident and we’ve got to be ready to fight and hopefully we make it to the final.”
While Spence’s words aren’t quite worthy of being hung up on the wall in the Anfield dressing room, they are still bold ahead of facing the most in-form player in European football.
Salah will be out to ensure they come back to bite him on Thursday as Liverpool look to book their place at Wembley at the expense of the confident Tottenham defender.
