Tottenham’s sheer force of will overcomes Man City in pulsating League Cup encounter

Ange Postecoglou dreams of second season success at Tottenham remain intact after his side’s sheer force of will overcame Manchester City in a pulsating encounter.

It was a Carabao Cup tie which jangled with nerves from first minute to last. While its frenetic action was only interrupted by a surge of second-half substitutions, the outcome was ultimately decided by goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr in the opening half-hour.

Postecoglou said: “It was great resilience by the boys. You play an unbelievable side and they ask you every question there is.

“Both goals were outstanding moments for us. We’re a side that’s growing and developing. I continue to see progress but there will be stumbles along the way. The key thing tonight was staying in the competition.”

Tottenham had barely been in the game when they sprang forward at pace in the fifth minute. The fluidity of the move owed much to a delightful flick from Brennan Johnson which released Dejan Kulusevski. An angled ball across invited a first-time shot from Werner. Too often wasteful in front of goal, Werner’s nerves were steady and his aim true on this occasion as he found the net to a mighty roar.

If that was the good news, there was a murmur of anxiety when a distraught Micky van de Ven was forced to limp off with a hamstring injury.

Werner was gifted an opportunity to score again courtesy of a misplaced Ilkay Gudogan pass, but dragged a shot into the midriff of Stefan Ortega.

If the German had been a surprise scorer, so too, was Sarr when Kulusevski worked a short corner across to him.

The Senegal international didn’t hesitate even though he was 25 yards from goal, imparting such curl at pace that his shot set off a yard outside the City post yet finished inches inside it. It drew gasps of delight when it was replayed on the giant screens.

City looked rattled. It might have been because of their delayed arrival at the ground due to traffic and a closed section of the M25.

Then, just as quickly, they found their rhythm. Gundogan whipped a free-kick onto the roof of the Tottenham net before Matheus Nunes embarked on a run outside Archie Gray only for his low cross to evade the lunge of Phil Foden. Savinho then attempted a Sarr replica but failed to find the requisite curl.

Foden skied a volley over the bar before spinning a free-kick just wide as City sought to reduce their arrears with half-time in sight.

By contrast, Tottenham were becoming increasingly desperate to escape to the sanctity of the changing room.

Under the cosh and with anxiety levels around the Tottenham Stadium rising with every misplaced pass and every City attack, they just had to hold on. They couldn’t.

Destiny Udogie couldn’t prevent Savinho from crossing the ball and no-one was marking Matheus Nunes at the far post. His volley bounced into the Tottenham net and brought a shake of the head from Postecoglu, who had been fearing the worst.

Tottenham re-emerged after the interval with a clear intention to add to their lead on the break.

Three times in the opening ten minutes of the second period, they sprinted forward. Firstly, a low Johnson shot was palmed away at full stretch by Ortega.

Next, it was Werner’s turn to race clear of three pursuers. He reached the City area still in control of the ball, but his shot was placed wide of the far post.

Finally, Kulusevski set off, but like Johnson before him, saw Ortega reach his effort.

The rhythm of the game was interrupted by a spate of injuries and substitutions, although one of the replacements, 19-year-old Jacob Wright, was inches away from an equaliser when his curling right-foot almost grazed the upright as it flew past.

For all City’s possession, the majority of second-half chances were still falling the way of the home side – and not always through their own making.

Josko Gvardiol had an aberration with a throw-in that went straight into the path of Tottenham substitute Richarlison only for the Brazil striker, no doubt shocked to receive the ball, to clip a weak shot at the body of Ortega.

At the other end, Guglielmo Vicario pawed at a corner which was headed into the path of O’Reilly by John Stones. The Tottenham keeper was indebted to Yves Bissouma for hacking the teenager’s shot off the line.

Savinho injury a concern for City

The defeat continues City’s poor record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having lost on four of their previous five visits to this part of north London.

Guardiola can at least comfort himself with the knowledge he has won this trophy on four occasions since his arrival in July 2016. As many times, in fact, as Tottenham have won it in their history.

And an injury list that mounted when winger Savinho was carried off will at least not be tested by any further Carabao Cup involvement this season.

Guardiola said: “I don’t like to lose, but this competition is a bit different and I like to see how the team behaves – the courage, the solidarity. I was really pleased with what I saw.

“We are in real difficulty with injuries, but when we are in trouble – and I’ve never been in this situation – then the players who are here all make a step forward. All of them.”

Thoughts of some of the Tottenham players

Dejan Kuluevski:

“It is important to win and get through in the cup, especially when you play a team like Manchester City. I am proud of the boys.

“I love playing against the best teams in the world as I can show my quality. We just have to keep going and keep focused. We have another important game against Aston Villa on the weekend.”

Timo Werner:

“It is always hard to play against a team like Manchester City. After a bad result on the weekend we wanted to show a reaction. We played good football and deserved to win. Always good to score, especially so early in the game. It was a great assist from Dejan [Kulusevski]. It has been a tough few weeks but you have to keep going.”

10:20 PM GMT

FT verdict

A warm embrace for Ange Postecoglu from Pep Guardiola at the final whistle as relief pours out at the Tottenham Stadium. The home fans are celebrating a victory that means more than a fourth round victory would normally, but when you haven’t won a trophy since 2008, each step along the way has to be appreciated. A curious match in terms of flow, but full of drama and an atmosphere that crackled from the first minute. You suspect that Pep’s concerns will focus not on his side’s exit, but on injury updates on Savinho and possibly Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake.

Full-time

There is the final whistle and Tottenham hold on to beat Manchester City 2-1 and progress through to the League Cup quarter-finals.

10:11 PM GMT

90+5 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

The ball is sent into the Tottenham box but O’Reilly cannot keep his header down.

Just 60 seconds remain. Will Tottenham hold on or can Manchester City find a later, late equaliser?

10:08 PM GMT

90+3 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Wright has another effort but his shot from just outside the box goes wide of Vicario’s right-hand post.

10:08 PM GMT

90+2 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Wright sends in a cross towards the far post but it does not find a teammate and goes behind for a goal-kick. Time running out for Pep Guardiola’s side.

10:06 PM GMT

90 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Six added minutes and Tottenham are hanging on here despite the fact that they should have buried this game a while back.

10:05 PM GMT

89 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Gray is booked for a cynical pull-back on Nunes.

10:04 PM GMT

88 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

What on earth is Vicario doing? He is an absolute headless chicken. The corner is sent in and he is miles out of his goal. The ball falls to O’Reilly, whose shot is brilliantly blocked on the line by Bissouma. That was appalling goalkeeping.

From the next corner Gvardiol meets it at the near post but his flicked header goes over.

10:03 PM GMT

87 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Bernardo flights a cross to the far post and Vicario just about gets enough of a hand to push it away from danger. Not particularly convincing but it does the job.

09:59 PM GMT

83 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

That should have been game over! Gvardiol has a moment of madness from a throw-in deep inside his own half. He misses Stones and it provides Richarlison with the chance to finish the game off but his shot goes straight at Ortega.

Wright’s cross is blocked by Dragusin and goes behind for a corner, which will be sent in by Wright. Tottenham do well to head the ball away from danger.

Manchester City keep it alive and Bernardo finds Wright at the back post with a cross from the byline, but his effort is so wayward it goes out for a throw-in.

It is like the walking wounded in north London this evening. Werner is the latest player to go down and will have to be replaced. Double change for Tottenham:

09:42 PM GMT

66 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Werner is sent free down the left and tries to pick out Johnson at the back post but Gvardiol intercepts and clears behind for a corner. Werner then sends in a corner and Ortega catches. The German did socre the opening goal of the match but he does lack composure and a cutting edge in the final third.

09:38 PM GMT

62 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Savinho’s night is coming to an end as a stretcher has been brought on. It seemed a rather innocuous injury but it has forced him off. Jacob Wright is on in his place.

Subs galore at the Tottenham Stadium. Possibly injuries, too. Micky van der Ven and Cristian Romero have limped off for the home side, now Savinho has been carried off for City after sitting down in pain. A heavy cost for both teams, no matter what the outcome.

Just after Manchester City made that change, Savinho is now down and receiving treatment.

Change for Manchester City:

OFF Foden

ON Bernardo Silva

09:32 PM GMT

56 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Werner has another chance in this match but fails to add to the early goal he scored. Had the German been more clinical tonight, this game would perhaps be out of Manchester City’s grasp.

09:31 PM GMT

55 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Another massive chance for the home side. Kulusevski is played in down the right-hand side and makes his way into the Manchester City box. He opens up his body to try and find the far corner but Ortega gets down well to his right to make the save. Ortega made a crucial save at that end of this stadium towards the end of last season to deny Son in a crucial game in the Premier League run-in.

09:29 PM GMT

53 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

If you are a Tottenham fan, you are probably glad Ange Postecoglou took Sarr, who was on a yellow card, off at half-time. Bissouma, Sarr’s replacement is booked for a foul on O’Reilly, not that Bissouma agreed with the decision.

Does that sum up Werner; a lack of clinical, cutting edge? Solanke plays a ball from quite deep inside his own half in behind the Manchester City defensive line, which was high up the pitch. It sends Werner in behind with a one-on-one chance with Ortega but his shot goes inches wide of the far post. That was a massive chance to restore Tottenham’s two-goal advantage.

Chance for the home side. Johnson drives one along the floor towards goal and forces Ortega into a save down to his right. The ball comes out to Solanke but the offside flag is up against him.

09:23 PM GMT

47 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 1

Savinho takes on a shot from outside the box but his effort misses the target.

09:20 PM GMT

Second half

We are back under way in north London. Changes for both sides at the break. Bissouma has come on for Sarr for the home side.

For Manchester City Kovacic and Gvardiol are on, replacing Gundogan and Dias.

HT verdict

Tottenham were desperate to hear the half-time whistle. Under the cosh as half-time approached and with anxiety levels around the Tottenham Stadium rising with every misplaced pass and every City attack, they just had to hold on. They couldn’t. Destiny Udogie couldn’t prevent Savinho from crossing the ball and no-one was marking Matheus Nunes at the far post. It was coming and it came. What price a City comeback now?

09:05 PM GMT

Half-time

That goal was one of the final moments of the half and Manchester City get back into the game on the stroke of half-time. Tottenham lead 2-1 at the break but the visitors are back in this match.

09:04 PM GMT

GOAL! Nunes gets goal back for the visitors

What was I saying about Tottenham wanting that half-time whistle? On the stroke of half-time Savinho stands up a cross from the right and picks out Nunes, who finishes past Vicario. Nunes has been one of Manchester City’s best players tonight, causing Gray problems down Tottenham’s right, and he gets a crucial goal for the away side just before half-time.

09:00 PM GMT

45 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Foden takes but he cannot get the free-kick to dip in time. That was a chance as Vicario had left him a lot of the goal to aim at.

Four added minutes, mainly due to Van de Ven’s injury. Tottenham will be the side praying for the whistle to come.

08:59 PM GMT

44 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

After Udogie gifts the ball away cheaply inside his own half, Romero fouls McAtee not far outside the Tottenham box to present a good chance for the visitors just before half-time. Romero protested but that was a clear foul, a rather rash challenge. Gundogan and Foden stand over it...

08:58 PM GMT

43 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Nunes lifts a clever ball into the box and Foden volleys it first time but cannot keep it down and it flies over the bar. That was a decent opportunity for a player of Foden’s calibre there.

08:56 PM GMT

41 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Despite being 2-0 down, Manchester City have begun to grow into this game and are starting to dominate. Tottenham are the ones who will want the half-time whistle to come sooner rather than later.

08:52 PM GMT

37 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Chance for Manchester City. Nunes drives past Gray and leaves him for dust. He gets into the box on the left-hand side and tries to lay the ball across to Foden but cannot quite find him. It may be a concern for Ange Postecoglou how easy Nunes breezed past Gray there.

08:50 PM GMT

35 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Foden lifts it in trying to find Dias at the far post but Dragusin heads away.

08:50 PM GMT

Manchester City have a free-kick in the centre of the pitch around 10 yards outside the Tottenham box after Kulusevski challenged Foden late.

08:48 PM GMT

32 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Sarr needs to be a little careful. He fouls Nunes and, although it was not a booking, he is already on a yellow card so needs to watch his step.

08:46 PM GMT

31 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Gundogan takes but he cannot keep it down and it ends up on the top of the net.

08:45 PM GMT

30 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Johnson looks amazed when he is penalised for a foul on Nunes not far outside the Tottenham box on the left but I do not know why he was so shocked. Good opportunity for the visitors to get back in this game.

08:43 PM GMT

28 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Nunes drives in a cross from the left but Dragusin does well to slide in and Tottenham can clear.

08:42 PM GMT

27 mins: Tottenham 2 Manchester City 0

Manchester City are on the ropes here and Tottenham can smell blood. This is their moment to hammer home their advantage.

08:41 PM GMT

GOAL! Sarr doubles Tottenham’s lead

The hosts are 2-0 up and are in control of this tie. They take the corner short and Kulusevski lays it off to Sarr outside the box. The may who has just been booked takes it first time and whips it in at the near post. There may be some questions about Ortega and whether he was too slow to get across.

Wow. First Timo Werner, now Pape Matar Sarr. Another surprise scorer to delight the Tottenham faithful, yet the purety of the midfielder’s strike cannot de denied. Such curl at pace from outside the post as it set off to inches inside as it crossed the line. So good, in fact, that it drew gasps of delight when it was replayed on the giant screens here.

08:40 PM GMT

24 mins: Tottenham 1 Manchester City 0

Werner is played into the right-hand channel of the box and his cross is deflected behind by Dias, who was not initially set to start for the visitors tonight.

08:38 PM GMT

23 mins: Tottenham 1 Manchester City 0

There is the first booking of the night and it goes to Sarr. He fouled Savinho and is told by referee Robert Jones that the yellow card is for an accumulation of fouls.

08:37 PM GMT

21 mins: Tottenham 1 Manchester City 0

Tottenham have the first corner of the night as the ball comes off Lewis last. Werner’s pass into Bentancur at the near post is flicked onto Kulusevski on the edge of the box but he blazes his effort way above the bar.

O’Reilly is back on his feet and back on the pitch.

08:35 PM GMT

19 mins: Tottenham 1 Manchester City 0

Could we be seeing another injury early in this match? O’Reilly lands awkwardly and is receiving some medical attention. Remember Manchester City lost Akanji during the warm-ups.

08:30 PM GMT

15 mins: Tottenham 1 Manchester City 0

Werner is already on the scoresheet and should be again there. Gundogan gives the ball away poorly deep inside his own half. It comes to Werner, who has a great chance in space on the edge of the box. He does not start his curling shot wide enough and it is a fairly simple save for Ortega down to his left.

08:28 PM GMT

13 mins: Tottenham 1 Manchester City 0

It is going to be the end of Van de Ven’s night as he fairly quickly signals to the Tottenham bench that he cannot continue. He is visibly upset as he makes his way off and heads straight down the tunnel. Udogie is on in his place.

08:21 PM GMT

GOAL! Tottenham take the lead

Werner gives the home side an early lead. It starts all the way from their own box and they move down their right. A brilliant first-time flick from Johnson sets Kulusevski away. He plays the ball across the face of the penalty area to Werner at the far post. The German hits it first time and beats Ortega to his left. 1-0 Tottenham.

It’s fair to say that those inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium weren’t expecting the Manchester City net to bulge when Dejan Kulusevski laid his pass in front of Timo Werner, such is the German’s poor conversion rate on chances. For once, his aim was true and his nerves steady as he found the net to a mighty roar.

Manchester City did have a terrible record inside this stadium before winning twice here last season.

Nunes fizzes a ball into the area from the left but it is behind all his teammates.

08:17 PM GMT

2 mins: Tottenham 0 Manchester City 0

Kulusevski goes down inside the Manchester City box on the right-hand side near the byline after a challenge from Gundogan but referee Robert Jones is having none of it, which looked like the right call.

Remember there is no VAR tonight so the on-field call is king.

Delays in arriving

Having negotiated their way around the M25 and a closed junction, City managed to arrive at the Tottenham Stadium in sufficient time that no delay to kick-off was needed. A good job, too. With an 8.15pm start time, many of those present would have been wondering how they would get home had there been any delay.

Pep Guardiola, who declared after the third round win over Watford that he is not going to “waste energy” on the EFL and would play his second team from then on, actually starts with five of the side that Southampton on Saturday, while the other six are all named among the substitutes.

Ange Postecoglou retains six of the Tottenham players who lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace on Sunday. Their notable absentees are James Maddison and Yves Bissouma who are both on the bench.

08:04 PM GMT

Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky

“It has always been tough since Ange [Postecoglou] was the manager [at Tottenham].

“They are so aggressive, dynamic, physicality and good patterns so this is a good team and it’s an increible test for our young players and experienced ones.

“We have to compete at our best.”

07:56 PM GMT

The thoughts of Ange Postecoglou

“Tonight’s game is one to be excited about. It gives us the opportunity to test ourselves against an outstanding opponent, while knowing the reward is a place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

“City have made a strong start to the season as they go in search of another successful campaign - and the Carabao Cup is one competition that has been particularly fruitful for them over the years.

“We want that too and are building a young, exciting squad to bring sustained success to the club. That does not happen overnight - it takes patience.”

A place in the quarter-finals at stake

Good evening and welcome to coverage from the League Cup as Tottenham host Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Tottenham booked their place in the last-16 after they came from behind to beat Coventry City 2-1. Manchester City earned their spot at this stage of this competition with a 2-1 home victory over Watford.

Tottenham, who are looking to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Sunday, will be without their captain Heung-min Son tonight.

“Sonny, no. Well he is almost fit but we will probably from our perspective aim him for the weekend. We’re quite confident he will be right for the weekend,” Postecoglou confirmed.

“The only one missing out, which is a bit of a disappointment, is Wilson [Odobert]. He’s had a setback during the week and it seems like it’s a serious one, so we’re waiting for more information. And then from the weekend everyone else is okay and Djed [Spence] is back training.”

Postecoglou is expecting a tough challenge tonight.

“I think it is fair to say most clubs rotate through the Carabao Cup, but you just have to look at Man City’s record in this competition and they are a fantastic football club. It is very difficult in this league and in this country to maintain that excellence over the time they have. They do that because, irrespective of who they play, there is a level of performance that they continually deliver whether they have rotated the team or not, or whatever the competition.”

Manchester City beat Southampton 1-0 at the weekend thanks to Erling Haaland’s goal to go top of the Premier League. In off-field news, midfielder Rodri, who is currently out with a serious knee injury, won the Ballon d’Or earlier this week and Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to the Spaniard.

“First of all, of course congratulations to him and all his family and friends,” Guardiola said. “It is incredible news for him and of course for all of us, all at City and our fans. We are so proud of him. It is the first time.

“We could never have imagined years ago that one player would receive this prestigious award. We are so delighted to be part of it and to share it with him and yes, hopefully it can give him energy to recover well for next season and be with us again.”

Manchester City will also be without Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku, Kyle Walker, Oscar Bobb and Kevin de Bruyne. These two sides met in the FA Cup back in January, with Manchester City the victors thanks to a late Nathan Ake goal.

Team news to follow shortly.
