Tottenham end White Hart Lane era with victory over Manchester United

Tottenham confirmed their place as Premier League runners-up by beating Manchester United 2-1 in an emotional farewell to White Hart Lane.

The hosts, leaving their home of 118 years, took the lead with an early Victor Wanyama header before Harry Kane doubled Spurs’ lead in the second half.

Wayne Rooney got United back into the contest with 20 minutes remaining, which reinvigorated the Red Devils after a poor 70 minutes, but it proved to be mere consolation.

The win ensured Spurs finished their final season at the Lane unbeaten at home for the first time in 52 years.

The Tottenham players were roared on by an intense crowd and didn’t disappoint their fans, taking a fifth-minute lead when Wanyama evaded England captain Wayne Rooney and headed into the far corner, following a pinpoint cross by Ben Davies.

Rooney then headed over for the visitors before team-mate Anthony Martial curled an effort inches wide of Hugo Lloris’ far post in the 18th minute.

Moments later, Heung-min Son had a brilliant chance to double the lead but contrived to hit his effort straight at United goalkeeper David de Gea, before Christian Eriksen drove the rebound wide.

Kane, symbolic of Spurs’ rise to title contenders, then beat de Gea to a fine Eriksen cross but saw his header flick off the crossbar.

The hosts were in rampant mood and again nearly found a second when Eriksen’s cross deflected off United youngster Axel Tuanzebe and forced de Gea to parry off the goal line.

Dele Alli was next to try his luck with a powerful drive which the visiting goalkeeper did well to push behind, before Kane forced him into another fine save on the stroke of half time.

But Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly might have manoeuvred an equaliser for Jose Mourinho’s men, albeit against the run of play, when he burst through on goal but opted to pass instead of firing at goal.

The hosts finally doubled their lead three minutes into the second half when Kane flicked Eriksen’s whipped free kick beyond de Gea for his first ever goal against the Red Devils.

It was Tottenham’s 200th goal under former Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino and the hosts showed no signs of slowing up, with Son fizzing an effort at the United goal on 52 minutes before Kane whipped an effort wide of the far post seconds later.

Jesse Lingard pulled a shot wide from the edge of the box as United sought a way back into the match, while Martial once more came close when he cut inside and bent an effort wide of the far post just after the hour.

But Rooney slotted home with 20 minutes remaining to give the visitors a glimmer of hope, converting from close range after a devilish run from Martial.

The goal, coming shortly after the introductions of Ander Herrera and Henrik Mkhitaryan, reignited Mourinho’s men and the former Chelsea manager also threw on striker Marcus Rashford in an attempt to salvage a draw.

It ensured a nervous ending and in the 92nd minute Rashford was released on goal by former Spurs man Michael Carrick, but he flicked his effort wide under pressure from the recovering defenders as United fell to a second consecutive league defeat.
