Automatic qualification for the knockout stage of the Europa League will go to the final day of the league stage for Tottenham Hotspur with the club hoping to avoid a play-off.

Spurs came out as 3-2 winners away at German side Hoffenheim on Thursday night. James Maddison put them in the lead after just three minutes, with Son Heung-min doubling the advantage in the 22nd minute.

Anton Stach then made it 2-1, but Spurs were able to regain a two-goal lead in the 77th minute with Son getting his second of the game. Things were nervy for Ange Postecoglou’s side at the end thanks to David Ngabi Mokwa Nitsu’s goal two minutes from time, but Tottenham were able to hold on for a valuable three points.

The win leaves Spurs in sixth place in the table following the later kick-offs, with the top eight automatically qualifying for the knockout stages. They are back in European action when they take on IF Elfsborg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next Thursday.

Ahead of the game, here are all the permutations you need to know:

Spurs win

A Spurs win will guarantee them a place in the knockout stages of the tournament. Tottenham are currently on 14 points, the same as the other teams from fifth to eighth position. Galatasaray and Bodo/Glimt are in ninth and tenth place respectively on 13 points, therefore, three points for Spurs would take them up to 17 points, with Galatasaray and Bodo/Glimt only able to reach 16 points.

Spurs draw

If Spurs draw, then other results will come into play. A draw would leave Postecoglou’s side on 15 points, meaning that they can be overtaken by Galatasaray, Bodo/Glimt, Viktoria Plzn and Olympiacos should they all win.

To qualify with a draw, Spurs would need four of Anderlecht, FCSB, Galatasaray, Bodo/Glimt, Viktoria Plzen and Olympiacos to drop points. They would also qualify if Lyon lose and three of the teams mentioned drop points.

Spurs loss

A loss for Spurs would leave them even more reliant on other results. They would then need four of the teams previously mentioned to lose their games.

They would also need one of Rangers, AZ Alkmaar or Union Saint-Gilloise to drop points. All three teams are currently on 11 points.

It could then possibly come down to goal difference with Spurs currently on +5, three behind Lyon and two ahead of Anderlecht and FCSB. If Lyon suffer a heavy loss, then they could potentially qualify on goal difference should only three of the aforementioned teams lose.
