Tottenham prepare opening bid for James Maddison with hope of compromise on £60m price tag

Tottenham are ready to step up their attempts to sign James Maddison from Leicester.

Spurs are thought to have moved ahead of Newcastle in the race for Maddison and are expected to accelerate talks over the England midfielder this week.

Leicester are holding out for £60million for Maddison, while Spurs hope to negotiate a lower fee and are thought to be preparing an opening offer of £40m up front plus add-ons.

Newcastle have cooled their interest in Maddison to focus on completing the signing of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.

Spurs want to sign a creative midfielder for new head coach Ange Postecoglou and have identified Maddison as a key summer target.

The 26-year-old has one year left on his contract at Leicester and wants to leave to help boost his bid to make the England squad for Euro 2022 next summer.

Spurs are also closing in on the signing of Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in a deal worth around £17m. The 26-year-old Italian is in London to finalise his move.
